While UFC president Dana White recently said the status of UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar would be decided in the next four to six weeks, things are apparently progressing much faster.

MMAjunkie.com has learned from sources close to the organization that the UFC is targeting an interim heavyweight title matchup between top contender Shane Carwin and former UFC champion Frank Mir.

If both parties agree, the contest may take place at the increasingly attractive UFC 111 event on March 27 in Newark, N.J.

If they're going to make an interim belt that must mean Brock will be out for awhile?

This is the best option at this point IMO. Then depending on the wait, I think the winner of Nogueira/Velasquez should get a crack at the winner of this fight. I'm assuming that's the way it will go.

"...Brock Lesnar looks to rehabilitate from a case of diverticulitis as well as potential additional issues that the the champion and White have been reluctant to divulge."

i wonder what they mean by "potential additional issues"?

I think there's a good chance that Brock will never fight again and that is why Dana is being so cagey about the whole situation

I think this is the best decision, then have the winner of znOG vs Cain fighte the winner, and Brock will get the best, and should Lesnar not return, just make it the undisputed title, similar to when Arlovski won the belt after Mir's accident.

I am not sure who do go for on this one, i don't know how good Carwin's sub defense is, the thing i know is he has a suspect chin and it looks like Frank Mir can hit. Now on the other hand if Carwin connects it will be good night Mir.

I am not a fan of Mir and i Like Carwin but I would have to go for Mir on this one.

This is SUCH a load of crap. Winning one fight after a devistating loss doesn't put Mir in line for a title shot, or an interim title match. That division is so stacked with more deserving guys who haven't yet gotten a shot. If he beats Carwin, then yea, put him in an interim title match, but don't just hand it to the guy because he beat Kongo.

Mir by whatever he wants. Carwin will be exposed like Vincent Gallo in Brown Bunny...

Who are the more deserving guys who should replace Mir then ?

Big Nog & Cain Velasquez are already booked to fight each other
Dos Santos is booked to fight at UFC 108
Randy moved down to LHW

They are the only HWs who are anywhere near deserving a title shot imo.

This is another case of 'right time, right place' just like Shogun's title shot.

I really don't like Mir i hope Carwin knocks his head into the crowd. I just hate that Mir can submit him haaha if it weren't for that I'd pick Carwin easy.

This is probably for the best. Lesnar shouldnt return to the octagon until he's at 100 %, and that will be a while, if ever. These guys are two and three in the division, this is the right matchup for an interim belt.

I see Carwin taking this one. Lets not all get crazy on murrs hands just yet. Yes he almost KOed Kongo with one punch but it was an old school chuck overhand left not right haha. Murr had some good boxing vs nog but we all know about that situtaion. I just think that if 50% of the fighters were to hit kongo with that punch he would of fell the same way. It was a wind up windmill punch with tons of force on that sucker. Murr can get a sub or drop Carwin but. I think carwin will be the stronger fighter and will win the exchanges on the feet. If one of those suckers that Carwin throws connects with Murr good night mr Murr.

Carwin KO

I would have to go with Carwin on this one just based off his performance vs GG I mean if GG cant keep him down how is Mir but after that last fight Mir is a man on a misson to destroy Lesnar
