With the Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight division in a bit of disarray due to a rash of fighter injuries and champion Brock Lesnar's mysterious but obviously serious illness, one fighter is openly contemplating options for future fights.Shane Carwin, who was next in line for a title shot until Lesnar was sidelined with injuries, initially opted to fight through his own ailment but has since decided to take time off to rehabilitate and to prepare for the birth of a child. When he returns, though, he's open to a fight with fellow contender Frank Mir.

That would be a great fight to see, but i dont think mir and carwin should fight until the ufc decides what to do with lesner. if he cant fight anymore then the belt could be up for grabs and a Mir/Carwin fight would be a great way to decide who gets the belt.

Mir/Carwin would be sick. I really like Shane Carwin more and more every time he speaks.

Bro, Lesnar is coming back for training in six months.
So I think he's gonna keep the belt and wont have a title defense in a while.

Too damn long if you ask me.

IMO If Lesnar can't return in time to defend his title I think it would be great if they the winner of Nogueira vs Velasquez takes the winner of Mir vs Carwin for the title. After that the winner of Junior dos Santos vs. Gibert Yvel takes on the person holding the title.

IF they did do the Mir Vs Carwin.

The UFC just eliminated an Interim belt during the Lesner / Mir II fight , I don't think Mir is interested in another Interim belt. Carwin doesn't even seem to care all that much about a belt. I think we'll see Mir vs Carwin , winner gets Lesner or else Velasquez/Big Nog winner for a vacant Heavyweight Title. I can see Fedor entering the picture late next year if he keeps winning.

And that would be the first loss on Carwin's record.

Carwin would shatter Mir's hopes of ever facing Brock again, and probably some bones in the process.

a few things...

lesnar will return within a year.

the belt was just "unified" in july...theres no reason to even think of needing an interim belt. bj penn defended the LW belt in april 08 against sherk and not again until august 09 against florian. thats 15 months and by that math lesnar would have until october 10 to defend it without a stupid interim belt being created. now i know what ill hear: "yea, but penn fought GSP in that time"; well thats still delaying a title defense for any contender.

while lesnar is healing/training/whatever hes doing, go through a little unofficial tournament. we have dos santos/yvel and cain/nog coming up. the winners of those fights can fight each other. and before that matchup, carwin and mir can fight; then the winners of those will fight each other. With this format, the HW devision can stay just as exciting and it will become more clear who the next contender should be.

i feel better with that off my chest hahaha

It sucks that the belts were finaly just unified but if lesner is going to be out for another year I think it is neccesary to create another interim belt...

The only reason why is because I would love to see all possible contender matchs be 5 rounds... Mir v Carwin, Nog v Cain, and any combo of these guys. (even if most of the fights wouldnt make it past the third round)

If he has diverticulitis which is what I've heard he could be out for a really long time....It is a very serious disease which almost killed my uncle. He dropped almost 100 pounds in 6 months...He was not in shape like Lesnar but he was out of commission for nearly 2 years....
