A light heavyweight bout between veteran Vladimir Matyushenko (23-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and former WEC champion Steve Cantwell (8-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is set for the preliminary card of next month's UFC 108 event.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) learned of the Jan. 2 matchup over the weekend.

Nima Safapour of No Limits Media Group, which represents Matyushenko, today confirmed that bout agreements have been distributed and signed by Matyushenko.

UFC 108 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view.

Matyushenko, a former top UFC light heavyweight contender, returned to the UFC in September after a six-year absence from the organization. The 38-year-old Belarusian topped Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic training partner Igor Pokrajac via unanimous decision at UFC 103 to pick up his 10th win in his past 11 fights.

Well...Doesn't that suck for Steve. Very crappy for an exciting up and comer. He's gonna get out wrestled in a wrestling match for 15 minutes. That sucks! I got Vlad UD!!! Sucks, I'd hope for Cantwell to get that redhead who just fought Bader or something. Maybe even give Houston one last shot. Cantwell's gonna get his 3rd straight loss IMO.

I think 4 losses in a row is enough of an argument *against* giving Houston "one last shot."

Doesnt seem like a good matchup for Cantwell but he does have a decent shot to win here but I will prolly stick with the janitor by UD.

Who would have thought that Stann would do so well in the UFC as opposed to Cantwell?

I had Cantwell winning at least 2/3 rounds against Stann in their rubber match. Thought he got robbed

I dunno, aside from their fight against each other they're both 1-1 and I have no doubt Cane would've also beaten Stann but feel that Cantwell would've been more competitive against Soszynski.

and in their fight against each other Sherdog scored it 29-29 Draw, and Junkie scored it 30-28 Cantwell, even though Stann took a UD. Personally, I haven't seen the fight.

I wouldn't say Stann has outperformed Cantwell, at least in my eyes but Cantwell is definitely getting the harder fights.

Yeah, I think that Cantwell has been more impressive than Stann.

Regardless Vlad is going to destroy Steve and I think he will even get the GNP stoppage by the beginning of the second round. I love Stann, he was a Marine Officer who won the Silver Star in OIF! All the best to him!

Too soon for this fight in Steve's career, it's a winnable fight for him however. Expect Steve to get his pink slip after the fight though, he had his chances and was probably one round away from beating Stann and Cane recently but blew it because of his greeness imo. The kid has potential that's for sure but Vlady wont be hesitant to shoot because Steve isnt known for his wrestling defense.
