UFC welterweight Anthony Johnson is a gigantic man.

His typical walk-around weight is somewhere between 215 and 220 pounds, the same weight that many UFC light heavyweight fighters maintain when not in training camp. That's the same weight Randy Couture is currently maintaining. The difference, of course, is that Johnson fights at welterweight, meaning he undergoes a 45lb weight cut for fight weigh-ins. Johnson has struggled making weight as of late. In September, he came in six pounds over the 171 pound limit for his bout with Yoshiyuki Yoshida after attempting a new form of weight cutting that involved drinking water and eating very little food in the week leading up to his fight. That method obviously did not work out, as Johnson was completely spent in the days leading up to the fight. He had to be carried to weigh-ins the day before UFC 104, and could barely summon the energy to even climb the stairs leading to the scales.

He needs to move up a division. Even cutting the weight to make 185 is a lot. It's really not healthy to be cutting that way, and it has to effect his performance.

he's obviously really good at cutting weight. I think he should drop to lightweight.

Josh Koscheck beat him. I don't care how many excuses come out about it.

That's just crazy. It's got to be unhealthy too(I'm no doctor, but I pretend to be one on the MMAPlayground).

I hate to see fighters cut excessive amounts of weight in order to fight in a lighter division. It is downright foolish. It is very unhealthy and any advantages you get...go right out the window when you are weak and gassed out. There should be numerous weigh ins for a fight. Two weeks before, one week before and ten minutes before the fight sounds good to me.
This would eliminate weight cutting.

It's only a matter of time before he moves up. I wouldn't be surprised if the fight with Kos was his last @ WW.

I want people to quit calling things like this excuses, I like hearing things like this that can explain to an extent a poor performance. TakeNog for example, looked terrible and was "done" then destroys Randy and is "back". Cutting 45lbs isn't a good idea.

It's amazing how well kept a secret this was until now. Just like how well Tito kept his cracked skull information from everyone until after the fight.

Not sure if I sense sarcasm or not...but it's because they don't want the AC to find out about it and risk getting pulled from the card.

This is exactly the reason. It's not like these fighters do this intentionally so they have an "excuse" for losing.

I agree this may be the last fight for AJ at WW. What is the point of cutting all that weight if you struggle with the stronger fighters and lose anyways??? Added to the fact that it isn't healthy.

Agreed. He'll still be fast, obviously big and there are less wrestlers in the 185. Oh and on top of that the second best fighter in the world at that weight isn't with the UFC anymore.

Maybe it was all in my head but I thought to myself 'He looks worried' when he came from behind the curtain at the weigh ins. As soon as I heard 170 I dismissed it but maybe he was scared of passing out.

As far as where he goes from here, he better step his game up. If Kos can do what he did to him at 170, Rumble will have some major problems at 185. One thing is almost certain, his fights will be exciting in one way or another.

If the commission knew this they wouldn't have let him even fight. This explains a lot about why he looked slower than normal. I think he is in the same boat as Alves is. He is just to big for this weight class and if he keeps cutting this much weight he will have a very short career life. Now unlike Alves I don't think Johnson could bulk down. He just needs to fight at a higher weight class. He is one of those guys to small for MW but way to big for WW. But for his health and career MW is much better for him in the long run.

Why did I think I heard he had to be carried out to weigh in? I was wondering how they allowed him to fight if that was the case.
