The UFC has handed out medical suspensions today from UFC 105. Because the event was in England and there is no MMA sanctioning body there, UFC served as the sanctioning body and was thus responsible for handing out the suspensions. 13 fighters in all were suspensed with 4 getting 180 days.

Wow, some of these seem a bit severe.

They're allowed to receive clearance from a doctor which would allow the suspension to be reduced if warranted.

To a certain extent, all the guys getting 180 still must sit out 45-60 days even with clearance. Remember that the "severe" suspensions are usually for precautionary reasons, they almost always can be cleared early.

Right, which is only 1/3 of the suspension time issued by the UFC.
