UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre says he may take a crack at making the Canadian Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 Summer Games.

I'll be damned. Would be pretty cool if he does it.
Still, though- wrestling in wrestling is way different than wrestling in MMA.

True, he has trained with the canadian olympic wrestling team before though and I've heard he more than holds his own. I'd like to see it even though it'll probably keep his belt on hold for a while.

So long as they divy up an interim belt while he is gone (it would most likely be for more than a year) then I'd be cool with it. Besides if all this did happen it could add a little drama to a division that is awesome but completely dominated by the champion.

As a UFC champion, GSP having Olympic credentials would only help to show that MMA is a legitimate sport for legitimate athletes.

I may get flamed here, but I believe that an Olympic Title (particularly in the sport of wrestling) is 10X a better credential to take to the grave than multiple time UFC champion.
If St. Pierre does this, then he truly will be the baddest man on the earth.
In related news...they need to shorten the Olympics. There are alot of sports in the Olympics that should not be in there at all...some are hardly sports. I'd like to see the Olympics shortened to maybe 20 sports max. No more power walking.

Dana would allow this right? It's not fighting in another "organization" or "promotion" right?

It would be funny if he sprawled a shot then instinctively threw a 1-2 that knocks his opponent out cold...
In all seriousness, this would do wonders for his wrestling game.

We're talking 2012 pal, two years away. In all likely-hood, GSP will not be the champion by then.

I think this would do wonders for GSP, MMA, and Dana and his very deep pockets. I mean think about it. An MMA champ in the Olympics???? This may help get MMA's foot in the door??

I only really care about hockey when it comes to the Olympics but this would change that.

I would hope the UFC would allow this. This would help make the public see MMA as a more legitimate sport.

Well they had no problems when he was going to train for beijing. The only reason he didn't take the try-outs was he stepped back in to take on Hughes for the interim title.
I'm chuffed about this I've been saying for a while that I had my fingers crossed he made it, I'm from London and could go watch him compete!
As it was from what I heard he was more than holding his own with the Canadian wrestling team and the coach was confident he had a shot at making the team. That was 2008, he'll be even better in 2012 IMO.
How crazy would it be that he could preform in the oylympics without training in the sport formally before starting MMA.
If thats not a great advertisment for MMA (and GSP) then I don't know what is. Plus, he's such an affable, respectful guy he'd put the sport in very good light!
