I've been wondering about this a long time and never asked anyone,so here it is. (a bit general but you'll get the idea)


Lets say if you can lift 300lbs on a machine but you can't push that amount of weight on a standard bench.is their anyway to possibly figure how much you're actually lifting?
Or are you still lifting that much weight,it's just the machine is their to balance it for you?

It's still the same weight as whatever the machine says. It's just way easier because it's on a guided track. Just like you assumed.

It depends on what kind of machine it is. As Jackelope said, if it's on a guided rack, it's the same weight. if it's some sort of pulley system though, that can change things.

For Sure. A Chest Press Machine standing vertically it is easy to push 200lb when your a 16 year old kid. then finding out that 200lb on a actualy bench press isheavy is quite embarassing.

depending on the pulley system which makes it easier...but the biggest thing is you don't develop the stabilizing muscles you would use on free weights. therefore if you isolate just your pecs like you would on a machine, you won't be working the secondary muscles nearly as much to be able to do it on a real bench.
