LAS VEGAS – Dutch heavyweight Gilbert Yvel has been given another chance to fight in Nevada. After a face-to-face meeting Friday with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he was given a one-fight license to compete in the Silver State.
During the meeting, he addressed concerns about his controversial past and made assurances he would behave honorably in competition.
Yvel was denied a license to fight Sergei Kharitonov for Pride 33 in February 2007 due to several well-publicized incidents involving disqualification and misconduct towards a referee.

It would be very cool to see Yvel in the UFC.

I don't really care to see Gilbert Yvel in the UFC, to be honest. He had his second chance (and third chance) long ago, and he whiffed on both of them. I am all for second chances, but it's one of those deals where this guy has burned too many people too many times to be trusted. I'm not for 4th and 5th chances.
It's not like he's a serious threat to the top 5 HW's, anyways. He may pull out a win here or a win there, but his overall game just doesn't seem to match up considering his lack of wrestling skills. Barnett absolutely demolished him. He showed a warrior's heart throughout the fight, but that was just one fight which shows heart isn't EVERYTHING.
All of that being said I do feel that Yvel is a great fighter. Just that he isn't a threat to the very top of the division, so why risk bringing him in when he's burned so many people before? If I were the UFC I'd have my sights set on someone like Overeem instead.

Cro Cop vs. Yvel? Could be a stand up brawl/kickboxing classic for the masses!

Checkered past aside, I just don't think Yvel is good enough to hang with the divisions elite. I mean can you see him beating Carwin, Lesnar, Velasquez, Big Nog, Couture, Mir, or Dos Santos? I can't. To be honest I don't even see him beating guys like Kongo or Herring.
The only reason I could possibly see for bringing this guy in is to give Cro Cop a beatable opponent with a name.
