So says Scott Coker. The Strikeforce CEO, in revealing plans for Fedor in the promotion, says the fighter's debut will be in October or November. They plan to have him fight a couple of times before a "big fight" and they have a list of 4 candidates as opponents for his debut, again emphasizing one of them is and will not be Ricco Rodriguez.

Say what you will about this whole deal, but at least they're being smart about building him up and giving him a name with the fans. Sucks for Fedor and Fedor fans, though. Now we'll have to defend his record even moreso than we normally would. I'm almost done defending him at this point, anyway. Freakin' Finkelstein

And perhaps this will stop those Ricco rumors as well. Not happening, folks. Let's move on...

It stops the Ricco rumors for sure but I have a question....what is the "BIG" fight they have planned for him. Overeem is their best HW hands down. Fedor's recently defeated both Big Tim and AA....who do they think they have for a big fight if they want him to take out Bret Rogers, Overeem, Sergei, Buentello before a big fight....WHO??

all I got out of this is were giving Fedor a can or two first so there is some absolute destruction in the ring but it will more likely be some names average MMA fans have heard of at least.. at the same time building up someone like Overeem or some such for a big showdown.. Or Strikeforce can pull in a big name from somewhere to throw against Fedor..

Strikeforce is smart.
this is what ive been saying they should do from the beginning.
Yes their trying to build fedor up.which is smart for the business.
everyones saying SF is going to go out of business.well SF is doing the right thing here and playing it safe.

The main problem I see is that Strikeforce is going to have one hell of a time trying to build up (or promote) a guy with such a limited audience. Those that are already watching Strikeforce are hardcore fans. They already know who Fedor is.
How does Strikeforce plan on changing things to reach out to the NON fan or the casual fan? That remains to be seen.
I, too, hope they succeed. However, I just can't see that happening at this point.

Best way I can see them doing this without getting Barnett in on the deal is to have Sergei fight Buentello and have Overeem fight Rogers first so that everyone can see those guys "built up" first so that if/when Fedor defeats any of them it will make him look that much better.
Grand Prix anyone!?

i get what your saying.
but having fedor fight a couple of fights before his big one is smart only in the sense that theres a POSSIBILITY that he could grow to be huge.yes its small but its still there.and if it were to happen than thats great for SF.
having fedor have his big fight right off is a HUGE gamble.what if he loses??(not saying he couldnt lose in his "smaller" fights) SF would gain nothing by him losing other than the US fans seeing fedor as just some no name.
SF is trying to make some money with fedor first which imo is the perfect move for them

Don't they only have him for 3 fights? This doesn't sound like a very safe plan. What happens if they take 2 fights building his name up, then when his contract is up with both M-1 and SF and he's free to do his own negotiating he goes back to the UFC and says "look now I'm worth even more because the US market knows who I am" Strikeforce could easily have this blow up in their faces.
On the reverse, if Fedor is highly loyal to M-1 it could work out for them. I doubt that it will work though, they don't have enough talent to build him sufficiently IMO.

whats to say he wouldnt re-sign with SF??
the game changes everyday.
theres just as big a chance that by the time his contract is up with SF.SF could have signed on more HWs.
UFC does it all the time.whats to say SF couldnt.(and yes i know the UFC is more financially stable )

Didn't Afredor say he went to SF to fight the best in the world? Not only was that a false statement but now he's not even gonna fight the best in the company. He's a Can crusher and I will stick by that until he fights in the UFC!!! And I hope SF does go under!
