After two high energy events, W1 MMA is back with a vengeance on October 10th, 2009 at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau. W1: HIGH VOLTAGE will feature the main event that fight fans have asked for as CARLOS ‘THE RONIN’ NEWTON makes his much anticipated W1 return against ‘MR. INTERNATIONAL’ SHONIE CARTER for the W1 Welterweight Title.

His record is like Jeremy Horns...packed with B level fighters in the W column, but never racked up the big names.

This fight almost happened for the UFC welterweight strap after Shonie KO'ed Matt Serra with a spinning back fist and Carlos won the belt from Milietich via headlock on the same night at UFC 31.Instead they tried to get Mach Sakurai, then Anderson Silva after Anderson beat Sakurai for the Shooto 167 pound belt.In the mean time, they had matched Shonie up with Milietich in a #1 contender fight, and Miletich ended up TKO'ing Shonie with a head kick.Anderson was supposed to fight Carlos at UFC 34,but that fell through,so then the fight was supposed to fall to Pat........the only problem was,the main event of UFC 34 was the rematch of Randy Couture and Pedro Rizzo from UFC 31,which is the same card that Pat and Carlos had fought on.That meant that the top of the 34 card would be a duplicate of the 31 card. The UFC didn't want to do that,so they screwed over Pat and gave the title shot to his protege Matt Hughes, and the rest is history.
Anyway, this ought to be a decent scrap, even though it's happening about 8 years late.I'd have to go with Shonie just due to the fact that he fights on a more regular basis and he isn't trying to fight on the side like Carlos is-IIRC Carlos owns a care home which he runs himself.FWIW,Carlos is probably one of the smartest-and nicest-fighters in the sport.Must be something in the water up there in Canada.....
WB.

That's a great fight and an interesting match-up. I'd eager to see who wins. Shonie is a good fighter, but I think Carlos is just a bit better. It'll be a great fight, but Newton wins this one like a Ronin.

Cant wait to see this live. W-1's last event was awesome with all 11 fights ending by stoppage and oonly one making it to thhe second round. Newton returned that night and dominated Nabil ending him by choking Nabil with his own arm and knocking him silly with several punches. Nabils no slouch either but Newton is HUGE. He`ll overpower Carter and finish him in the second. Anybody else plan on going?

Yeah, I think Newton just has more finishing ability. I don't see Shonie taking this one by any way other than a decision. Also, I think Newton's record has to be the most deceptive record in MMA.
14-13
I'd say about 10 of his 13 losses were to guys that were champion level fighters and a number of them were decision losses.
I'd like to check out Newton's new school considering it's right in my backyard, but I just don't have the time to go. He has had a recent fight so he should be in pretty good shape.
