Following a June defeat at the hands of Joe Riggs, welterweight slugger Phil Baroni (13-11) was today officially released from his contract with Strikeforce.

Baroni fought just twice for the organization, compiling an 0-2 record.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he wasn't ruling out a future relationship with the "New York Bad Ass," providing Baroni can put together a win streak in the welterweight division.

"We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career," Coker said. "If he can, maybe one day he can return and fight for us."

A former middleweight, Baroni made his Strikeforce debut in June 2007. Facing MMA pioneer Frank Shamrock for Strikeforce's first-ever middleweight title, Baroni was choked unconscious in the second round.
The loss to Shamrock started a three-fight skid for the hard-hitting Baroni, a run that ultimately inspired the 33-year-old to drop to the welterweight division, where he put together a three-fight win streak before the loss to Riggs.

A report from Sherdog.com cites the UFC as Baroni's likely new employer. Baroni's agent, Ken Pavia of MMAAgents.com, was unable to comment on the matter when contacted by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

so the UFC releases a guy like Tamdan McCrory and is supposedly going to sign an over the hill Phil Baroni? i guess since Tamdan is looking to move to 185 they're going to get him acclimated to the weight class before he takes on top competition. anyway, if the UFC does sign Baroni i'll be extremely puzzled. Phil probably can't hang with 90% of the UFC's welterweights at this point in his career.

I seriously doubt it....he record is in the toilet. He would have to go on a killer win streak first.

Hasn't he went like 3-1 or 4-1 at welterweight?

I don't know, he won't do much...but I would absolutely love to see Baroni vs Brown!!! That would be a fun fight to watch!

I disagree with all the negetive critism, Baroni has done well at WW, only losing to Riggs, I'm hopeful this is true so he can come back. AND WILL PEOPLE PLEASE STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT MCRORY BEING RELEASED.

It seems a lot of former UFC fighters are returning to the UFC.

If this is so, Baroni better work on his cardio and ground game. If he wants to hang with UFC WW's.

i wouldn't say i **** on Baroni's record but the guy hasn't beaten anyone with a winning record since 2006. he is past his prime and probably can't hang with the UFC's mid level WW's never mind the top guys.

though McCrory's wins were over lower level guys his losses are to mid-high level fighters. Hazelett is an absolute ground wizard, Howard is emerging as a decent threat, and Gono is a very crafty veteran. he'll rack up some wins at 185 outside the UFC and he'll be back.

exactly . I dont mean to bash on Baroni but look at the division. Even a gimme fight would probably present trouble to him

baroni has alot of skill and potential, He is a good boxer and wrestler and has submissions. I think he threw away the best years of his career training out of the hammer house which is no more than a wrestling school, which may have been good way back in the day but got left in the dust in a hurry with modern refined mma. I know he trains with aka sometimes but sometimes isnt enough besides they probably just cater to his striking instead of forgeing an all around game. I would like to see baroni make the jump to a real legit mma camp like xtreme couture, jackson or american top team. Im a baroni fan but if he dosnt make the changes needed in his training he wont last in the ufc, although for a fight or two he will be a pretty big draw.
