That perhaps slightly skewed opinion comes from Machida's training partner, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Silva feels that despite having much respect for Rua he didn't fight enough to deserve a shot at the belt.

Whether that is or isn't true I would say unless the fans are content with the belt sitting around for 9 months or more then this was the best move by the UFC that they could make other than forcing Rampage into the shot

I have thought about this also, but the only person I could see deserving a title shot besides Shogun would be Jardine. As much as I would love to see him fight Machida I just can't see someone getting a title shot after coming off a loss no matter how close a fight it was. So if Shogun doesn't deserve a title shot, who in the lhw does? Also if Silva doesn't think Shogun deserves it why doesn't he man up and fight Machida then? BFF my ass he just doesn't want to loose, you see plenty of training partners fighting each other and from what I have seen those are some bad ass fights. Silva and Machida need to stop rubbing each others butts and fight.

I was totally going to go the other way with this but yeah I guess you are totally right. I would like the belts to stay as active as possible. Just makes me think though that at one point in time Jardine deserved a shot but I guess the timing wasn;t right for him.

Well, Anderson got his shot directly after destroying Leben at a fight night event. Did he deserve the title shot? I think not. But he absolutely dominated and knocked out the champion, so he seemed to be ready.
If Shogun is able to knock out machida, nobody would question his shot after that. that's just the fight game. And when you look at the LHW division, who else is coming off a win over a top opponent?
Rampage defeats Jardine -> but is injured and buisy with TUF. Luiz Cane is 4-0, last win against Cantwell with an UD -> not good enough Rich Franklin coming off a win over Wanderlei -> but lost a SD to Henderson before that. he needs one more win before a shot at the LHW title. Dan Henderson -> wants to stay at middleweight Brandon Vera -> needs more wins Jon Jones is 3-0 -> too early Kristof Soszinsky is 3-0 - too early
Everybody else just lost or isn't even in the picture. You see there's not much of another fighter taking that contender spot right now.

OK so Anderson wanted a big fight with Forrest Griffin, right?
I wonder what his thoughts would be on how much Forrest deserved a title shot... KO'd by Jardine, beats unranked opponent, beats ranked opponent, title shot, is I believe how it went... sounds a little familiar if you ask me
Or Lesnar... loss / win / title fight
Rampage... Beats middleweight Eastman, title shot
Or HIMSELF for that matter... Beats Leben, title shot, lol

It's a fight with Shogun that people are going to pay big money to see...
Shogun had a really bum knee, and got choked out by a very very game Forrest Griffin. He looked awful against Mark Coleman, who beat Stephan Bonnar and proved he can still hang at 205. He absolutely demolished Chuck Lidell with a LEFT HOOK and borderline (Yet to be determined) knocked him into retirement.
Does he deserve the title shot? Probably not. If he wins just one round on one judge's scorecard come UFC 104 though, he will have done something that nobody else has done, and thus justified his title shot.
I was thinking about flying to Cali to watch this actually. Should be a good fight.

Although I cant think of anyone who deserves a title shot more then shogun , Rich asked to fight anderson . The MW division was shallow at the time . Anderson was the 3x defending cage rage champ . Anderson had recently decimated Rivera (who fought 3 competitive rounds with rich) .
