It seems that whenever the UFC wants to elevate a fighter to the next level they give them Alan Belcher...and then Belcher wins. Then when the UFC tries to elevate Belecher by giving him a very beatble opponent..he loses.
So what is Alan Belcher? If he continues to beat top guys he's suppose to lose against and then lose to guys he's suppose to win against...what does that make him?
He can't be a gatekeeper...cuz the guys he beats continue to win other matches against other top guys and move up the ranks...and the guys he loses too kind of linger in the middle.
But then again, he can't be a stepping stone either for the same reason...the good guys can't beat him, and when the bad guys beat him it does nothing for their careers.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.
I think he's too young to be a gatekeeper.I guess when you break it down he's 5-3 in the UFC, which isn't too shabby. The loss to Jason Day was a pretty big setback though. If he pulls off another upset and smokes Akiyama, he's a contender for sure.

My man Belcher stands a good chance against Akiyama and just may grind out a decision. I think this is the fight that answers these questions. WAR BELCHER AND YOUR JOHNNY CASH TATOO!!!!!

he would be one of the best, he needs to stay consistent, don't lose the beatable opponents like jason day think about it he had a winning streak snapped by day he is on a winning streak if he wouldn't have lost to day he would have had a title shot by now i want the dude to win but come next sat i will be rooting for akiyama
if he wouldn't have lost to day he would have had a title shot by now
Not necessarily, if he had beat Jason he probably fights someone like Henderson or Marquardt or another top MW and probably get submitted before ever getting a title shot.
The OP way overthought this thread. The answer is simple. Alan Belcher is a young fighter who is constantly improving and these are the growing pains they go through.
Way do people try so hard to categorize people. Hes simply a fighter, and at the moment I think hes overated. His striking is not as great as people talk about. I dont think he deserved the win against Ed Herman, every ******* round dude was closing out taken and down and gettting gnpd, and Kang was beating him on the feet in that fight, when Kang got out of composure.
Until I see otherwise, Alan is a solid B level fighter. Stay tuned.
