Donald Cerrone will meet Benson Henderson for the interim WEC lightweight championship at WEC 43, but current titleholder Jamie Varner says the gold they’re fighting for is “garbage.”

“It’s funny; it’s like the interim belt is a glorified second place,” Varner told Sherdog.com. “To me, I think that’s bulls--t. The interim belt doesn’t mean anything. They have a belt, but they don't have the belt. It’s garbage.”

The interim title fight between Cerrone and Henderson will take place Sept. 2 at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio.

I'm not a Varner fan...I'm a fan of Cerrone...but I agree with Jamie on this one. Interim titles are lame.

i agree with varner to a point but heres food for thought: hes LW champ in the WEC and calling an interm belt second fiddle, i found that to be ironic.

LOL that's a good call Cowcatcher. I wish all this drama wouldn't have unfolded with the WEC's LW division. I would have liked to have seen Varner move back up to the UFC afterward to test himself against those guys.

I think some people aren't reading the entire interview. He's pretty respectful of both guys, actually. A lot of what comes out of Varner's mouth right now is just sheer frustration with what is going on with all of this ****. Cowboy has been over the line IMO, and a lot of what has been said is merely a reaction to that.

Obviously people are going to take sides, but I've seen a lot more **** talk come out of Cowboy's mouth than I have out of Varner's.

Whatever anybody thinks of Jamie Varner on this he is right.

Hes the ******* champion, he was beating Cerrone, it was close, but he was beating him till Cerrone hit him with an illegal knee. Cerrone did nothing to deserve the lw champyunship.

When he and Benson fight, so what they have a title, are they really the champ?

How in the world could anyone disgree with Varner on this? You could but its foolish.

I dont blame him one bit for being pissed and I know if put in his shoes 99% of you would be just as vocal or more so.

The WEC looks bad in this to me.

Agreed. Hopefully Cowboy backs off a bit...I refuse to root for douchebags and he's on that road to becoming one...

if the champion is not able to defend his belt for whatever reason, then an interim belt makes perfect sence, at least to me. this way the division is not stalled by an injury of one fighter and you have a five rounder for lets say the number one contender spot. right when the champion is ready again, unify the belts. nothing wrong here at all!

I think the interim belt is the right call also, and I also agree that Cerrone is coming off looking much worse than Varner in this exchange.

Well I'm going to have to say varner is a whiney little kid, I really haven't seen him handle any adversity, specifically media stuff, like a man, or atleast not like the majority of fighters. It's true he is udner contract with the ufc/zuffa but is the wec champ, more or less though im going to agree with him that an interim belt isnt the real belt and it is second place, but I still approve of interim titles, i didnt really agree with it for the couture situation but if a guys injured we want to see the top guys fight still and we dont want to see them go to decisions we want 5 rounders and we want headliners. It doesn't matter I don't know why people are disagreeing with varner on this point specifically but i also dotn see why people are getting on the wec for this, varner will get teh winner and it will be a title bout regardless f whether its for the interim title or not
