Former top middleweight contender Martin Kampmann (15-2) is in talks to tangle with UFC sophomore TJ Grant (14-2) in a welterweight match up at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale at “The Pearl” at the Palms Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 20.

Grant announced the bout earlier today via his Facebook page and MMAmania.com was able to independently confirm the announcement with Grant’s camp.

Kampmann made his welterweight debut at UFC Fight Night 18: “Condit vs. Kampmann,” spoiling the Octagon debut of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Welterweight Champion and top-ranked 170-pound fighter Carlos Condit.

He eeks out a decision against Ryo Chonan and they're throwing him to the hitman who just beat Condit?

Dunno about that matchmaking, but I guess TJ grant must've gotten that email saying "here is who u can fight... u get extra cred for takin on kampmann!"

wait... I must be playin too much 2009 UNDISPUTED. ROFL

I suppose with Anthony Johnson pulling out, they had to make something happen. I don't understand why they didn't just matchup TJ Grant with Matt Brown--which would have been a very evenly matched bout, rather than sticking him as an underdog. It seems to be Joe Silva's penchant as of late to build up fighters rather than make the most evenly matched fights possible.

Seriously, I would think they put Kampman up against koscheck or Karo even Hazelett would be good (is he scheduled to fight soon?)

I would liked to have seen Matt Brown woop up on Grant then start taking a step up in competition...Any word on a replacement for Matt yet?

wow i cant beleive this match making. this is really really dumb kampman is a very good fighter who proved that he belongs with the best in the world when he beat condit so why do u throw him an easy fight if he wins he barely moves up in the rankings but if he losses he goes way down in the rankings.

Weekly updated it too, citing a source close to negotiations saying it's not happening.

Glad that fights not happening...per everything that was written above...question now is what do they replace the fight with...especially since Matt Brown has opted not to fight to heal up nagging injuries
