Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will step in for injured Strikeforce heavyweight titleholder Alistair Overeem against Team Bison member Brett “The Grim” Rogers at “Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields” on June 6.

Overeem has pulled out of the fight with a hand injury.

The Fight Network learned of the heavyweight contest from sources close to both fighters.

Rogers (9-0) is coming off a second-round TKO win over Abongo Humphrey at “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” on April 11. A veteran of the now-defunct Elite Xtreme Combat organization, Rogers boasts wins over heavyweight sluggers Jon Murphy and James Thompson.

Arlovski (15-6), meanwhile, has not seen action since challenging Fedor Emelianenko for the WAMMA heavyweight title at “Affliction: Day of Reckoning” on January 24. Training under Freddie Roach, one of boxing’s most highly acclaimed coaches, the Belarussian hopes to rebound from a first-round knockout against “The Last Russian Emperor” and move one step closer to putting gold back around his waist.

“The Pitbull,” who will be making his first appearance for the California-based Strikeforce promotion, was initially rumored to make his professional boxing debut in the aftermath of the loss to Emelianenko. But Arlovski is now set to return to his mixed martial arts roots against the less experienced Rogers.

A former UFC heavyweight champion, Arlovski has recorded wins over Roman Zentsov, Vladimir Matyushenko, Wesley Correira, Tim Sylvia, Paul Buentello, Fabricio Werdum, Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson throughout his 10-year career.
The winner of this fight will likely go on to challenge heavyweight kingpin Overeem for the title later this year.

Why would Rogers agree to this fight? He has the oh so quoted "snowballs chance in hell".

I love this fight because I hate Rogers but come on, make it fair.

Although I agree that AA was winning the striking battle with Fedor (until he got struck!) I believe AA will use his better ground game to pull off a sub somewhere in the 2nd round. - imo

Phew, I like this fight better for Rodgers then Overeem right away. I think it's a great warm up for Overeem. I know everybody thinks AA's gonna KO him, but Rogers hits hard and AA has been KO'd on more then enough occassion for it to definitely be able to happen again. I like AA especially since he at least was training with Freddie Roach but I think Rodgers can tap one on the chin and put AA too sleep.

Im upset to hear Overeem is out I was looking forward to that fight but Arlovski is a great replacement. Arlovski in my opinion will dominate no matter where this fight goes!!!!

Arlovski has about zero chance of getting caught. He doesn't come in anymore like he used to and I hardly think Rogers can counter like Fedor.

Arloski by domination in any and all ranges and positions. The only chance this has of being competitive is if Rogers cand cageclinch Arlovski.

Zero chance of getting caught? That's a bold statement.......AA has a suspect chin and if Rogers can land one big shot the fight could end quickly......With that said AA is definately supose to win this fight, but you can't write off Rogers so easily......I might even pick Rogers for the upset just for the hell of it......

MMA has no such thing as "no chance". I do think AA will take him out with a beauty of a combo, but no chance has always burned us in the past.

I like AA in this but Rodgers is still a gamer and can surprise everyone and pull out a win.

Good fight imo.

This will be Rogers baptism by fire.
Rogers doesn't have to win this fight. He only has to look good in losing.
Even if AA takes him, along as Rogers has a good showing it will validate him as a legit contender (ala,Tito VS Forrest)

I'm leaning towards AA,but I think this will be a fight that's more about making a new star while keeping an already established one cemented in the top 10.

Other than Arlovski's first pro loss,he's never displayed this infamous "weak chin" that everyone talks about. He's only been KO'ed by Pedro Rizzo,Tim Sylvia and Fedor, and the shots they hit him with would have knocked out most farm animals. Those three guys are also some of the hardest hitters in the history of heavyweight MMA.

Brett Rogers is a decent fighter but he has not shown any signs that he is ready for a Top 3 heavyweight like Arlovski.

WB.
