I would start by calling the sport MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and explaining the meaning of those words and what the sport involves.

Just tell them theirs gonna be losts of blood and violence. Might not be the best way to sell the sport in terms of making it more of a legitimate sport, but theres an epicly higher chance a n00b will watch if you say that, than telling them a certain fighter is going to give them a master class in how to use the rubber guard....

Violence sells.

I would start with a presentation.
(this would be great if you can do pin point presentation or something like that)

A picture comes up on the wall.
Your speech may go something like this:

"Their once lived a man who had a dream. A dream that one day the frail and weak could overcome the strong and powerful.

(show unassuming pictures of this man.He is Helio Gracie)

And in time, a foreign art would become family tradition.

(Show old photos of the gracie family)

A tradition that would become known to the whole world as Mixed Martial Arts.

(Music begins to blair.Maybe the theme song to UFC unleashed?)

Now random, short video clips appear as the music is blasting.
Gonzaga KO'ing CC with a headkick.
Bob Sapp powerbombing Big Nog
BJ Penn subbing a bloody Joe Stephenson
Eddie Alvarez and Hellboy duking it out
Kevin Randlemen suplexing Fedor
Wanderlei Silva Knocking out Sakuraba

The screen goes black.

Big white letters appear.

This is MMA.

Maybe something like that would work?

I personally think that the playground's weighted popular opinion poll is as good as any right now at providing rankings... most others are just a small panel making decisions. The rankings that I see used in the media the most often are sherdog's.

Not that it means much to any promo you may be starting. If you are trying to be realistic about starting a promotion from scratch you need to look at the small companies like Extreme Challenge, KOTC, UWC, etc. Some people just buy the cage and set it up at local venues. They get paid a flat fee to provide the cage... somewhere between $500 and $1000 per night. This kind of thing is especially prevalent on the amateur circuit... fights at county fairs and bars. If you are looking for more than that and want to research how to set up pro cards, the EC website might be a good place to get some ideas from.

All good suggestions but I think that noobs (especially those you would provide an entrepreneurial presentation to) would intially be scared off by the blood and gore.

I would start more tame and get a feel for your audience while you're presenting. It's always cool to have a blank (black) slide near the end of your presentation and then have a bunch of bonus slides ready to launch if needed after that. So if you don't think your audience is ready for the blood and gore, you just end your presentation at that blank slide. But if the audience looks eager to learn more, then you can proceed with the bonus segment of your presentation.

You don't need blood and gore to sell it. In fact the blood and gore is what mma is trying to subdue in the minds of legislators when trying to get sanctioned in the remaining states.

I usually tell noobs....
You've seen a boxing match right?.... well have you ever thought what would happen if the fighters were allowed to throw a kick or tackle eachother to the ground? (this gets them really thinking, and then you tell them all about the Gracie family)
