The NSAC today has suspended Karo Parisyan 9 months and fined him $32,000 for a positive drug test arising from his fight with Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94. The fine is 40% of his total purse from the fight. Additionally, the fight result is changed from a split decision win to No Contest and Karo must submit to random drug testing.

I'll look up what Keith Kizer said, but generally there are only 4 instances in which a fight can be ruled a NC or the result overturned, and a drug test failure like this is one of them. Not common though, the last time was when Nick Diaz beat Gomi but tested positive for marijuana.

Also, a separate report I've seen reports the fine was only $24,000.

This is crazy. I feel bad for Karo, nothing seems to go his way.

I can agree to an extent. He knew what he was doing if he was taking Dilaudid...no back pain is that severe. Hopefully like some people mentioned in prior threads, he'll take this 9 months to train and get his head on straight and get healthy if indeed that is why he was taking those pain killers. Regardless, it's deserved, though I only expected a 6 month sentence due to his possession of prescriptions.

Yet another long layoff for my favorite fighter.

I was expecting 1 year, with 9 months at a minimum, so I felt they were just the slightest bit lenient. Best-case would've been 6 months.

im a little surprised they overturned it, but maybe thats what the ACs are going to do more often now. best case scenario is the guy gets healthy stays commited to getting back in there in good shape and makes a good run after the suspension. i like karo, and this is a little disappointing but its better than a failed steroid test IMO.

he should take these 9 months and do some soul searching and come back strong bc they might cut him now.

I think the UFC will stick behind him. He's still very young, and I don't think taking pain killers is as serious as steroids. I don't think it should be changed to an NC, because I doubt the particular painkillers Karo was taking had any bearing on the outcome. Also you look back at Sean Sherk's bout with Hermes Franca...maybe it's because both tested positive for steroids--but either way Sherk tested positive but he retained the win.

I'm not a Karo fan but I respect him for his past accomplishments in the Octagon. There's no denying he used to be a real threat WW. He caught some crap luck keeping him out of a few title opportunities in his prime, but since then other guys just seem to have evolved beyond him while his game has stagnated. Lately he seems like a grappling gate keeper (sort of a counterpart to Lytle as a stand-up gate keeper) then a real contender. If this is the end of his time in the UFC I won't be sad to see him go.

Besides generally boring fights and his game not evolving, he has had lot of problems with injuries, panic attacks and now pain killers. It may be the best thing for him to take some time off and get himself healthy then try to get his head straight again. Then maybe get a few fights on a smaller circuit to build his confidence back up and light that fire in him to get back in with the big promotions.

If he can get healthy and earn his way back up I will be happy to take the easy 11 points I used to get in my fantasy picks by taking Karo by decision against anyone who isn't a Top 5 WW. If not the UFC needs to trim their roster anyways so let the more deserving fighters have their shot.

I've never really been a big Karo fan to say the least, however maybe he can use his time away from the sport productively, and come back a more focused fighter.

This also gives him 9 months to find a mouthguard that fits.
