In his first action since a July 2008 loss to Fedor Emelianenko, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia will face Ray Mercer in the main event of Adrenaline MMA III.

First reported as a possible bout by Fiveouncesofpain.com, Sylvia's manager and Adrenaline MMA promoter Monte Cox today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Sylvia vs. Mercer will be headlining the May 30 event at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J.

While first pitched as an MMA contest, Sylvia (24-5 MMA, 0-0 Boxing) will instead turn in his open-fingered gloves for a pair of boxing mitts.

No matter how this turns out it won't be positive. Sylvia will get no love or legitamicy for this. If he wins he beat an old man, if he loses he lost to an old man. I'm interested, but just because of the freakshow vibe.

But Sylvia's got to know it's not good for him.

I really didn't think Tim could fall any further, from UFC champ then facing the best heavyweight in the world to fighting a guy Kimbo Slice beat. This is really really sad for Tim. Don't get me wrong, I think this is where a guy like him belongs, I just never thought I would see the day. I mean couldn't they at least get him some sort of Gilbert Yvel type person who doesn't like submission fighting and they could just duke it out. I'm just shocked, Ray Mercer, of all the heavyweights they could have found to fight him, they got that guy. This is a lose-lose-lose situation, Tim (Win or Lose), Ray (Probably Lose) and the fans (definitely lose).

I feel kind of bad for the guy..
He has no upward mobility in MMA only lateral and downward movements.

Man,who came up with this idea?Tim Sylvia is NOT a boxer. His style of boxing for MMA simply won't cross over well for a traditional boxing match.Mercer will either TKO him or win a lopsided decision.

Someone needs to slap Monte Cox.He couldn't find a middle of the road HW MMA fighter to go up against Tim?C'mon.

Heck, make the Ken Shamrock fight happen now.Considering Ken only made $20,000 for his last fight,I don't think money will be an issue.Considering that Ken actually looks like he remembers how to fight now,it might be an interesting matchup-more interesting than a boxing match against Ray Mercer, that's for sure.

WB.

I have a feeling this is going to be the slowest paced slugish boxing match of the year. I want both of these guys to retire for good. Hopefully they double KO each other .lol

Yeah but...Ray Mercer was good back in the day. Tim doesn't need to go in against a contender or an up and comer. He gets to go against someone who is no longer in the upper echelon doesn't have KO power, and has skills. It's a good guage of where he is at. Not a bad idea if you want to swim in more than one pool.
