With plans to secure separate opponents for Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson and the promotion’s former 155 pound king Gilbert Melendez apparently having following through, sources have informed FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Strikeforce officials could be set to announce in the coming days that the two will rematch each other on April 11 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

This is a rematch I've wanted to see for some time now. Should be a good fight. I think Thompson wins again but Gilbert has a better showing.

Umm...boo. Where does Mitsuhiro Ishida fall into this mix? Too soon for a rematch in my opinion. But Josh wins yet again. I hope to see him back in the UFC soon.

Im guessing it was either, do a rematch between these two or have them fight lesser opponents.

Not sure how Ishida is a lesser opponent. He's beaten Melendez, and deserves a shot at Thomson.

ishida is fighting nakamura at dream 7, not a lot time in between + they can use footage from the last fight to hype the "rematch"

Didn't realize, he's dropping to 145 for the tourney?

This is just as bad as the Faber/Pulver rematch (well, almost anyways). Melendez lost an extremely one-sided fight and hasn't beaten anybody since then, let alone fought. I remember there being rumors of Melendez only having one fight left on his Strikeforce contract and that he might bolt for UFC, but I don't like this rematch at all. They don't need to make this fight, there are already enough bigger fights on the card to support it. I know they want all the aired fights to be huge, but come on. Someone like Duane Ludwig, who filled in for Thomson against Yves Edwards should be fighting Thomson for the title, or even against Gilbert.

I have to completely disagree. Not even almost. Thomson and Melendez are both still young guys that may have not even reached their prime yet. While the first fight was one sided, these guys are constantly improving enough to make the second time around a lot more competitive with possibly a completely different outcome. You could definatly say the same for Faber, but Jens in on the downside of his career. He's an old dog, and you know how the saying goes. Faber and Pulver are on completely different levels at this point in their careers, where as Josh and Gilbert are not. All that being said, i'm still taking Thomson in the rematch.

Confirmed today.

Article

If it hadn't been for the DREAM FWGP & WWGP coming up things might've worked out different, among other things.
