After Zuffa closed down the welterweight division in the WEC and transferred the top fighters over to the UFC, UFC Vice President of Talent Relations Joe Silva was left with a roster of over 200 fighters heading into this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 17.
In order to alleviate the bloated roster, up to 50 fighters could be cut over the course of the next several months. FiveOuncesOfPain.com was the first to report that the UFC made a series of cuts over the weekend that included lightweight Rich Clementi, welterweight Luigi Fioravanti, and middleweight Derek Downey.
Five Ounces of Pain has also learned that American Kickboxing Academy light heavyweight Christian Wellisch and heavyweight Eddie Sanchez can now be added to the list as well.

Sanchez did put on two good fights against soa and hardonk, but lost last 2 and lost to McCully. Overall 3-3 in UFC
Wellisch 2-3 in UFC and lost last 2

I have been saying the UFC needed to axe Sanchez for a while. It took long enough. Send him to the "new" Strikeforce...he will fit in just fine. Same with Wellisch...he would fit in good over there.

Awesome the HW division still sucks and now theres only a dozen HW's. Whats next for the HW division? Sink or swim imo, next step should be Fedor, the UFC's exposure of him would be more massive than any fighter in UFC history and the HW division would be stacked.

Great I was worried for the UFC HW picture when they had to keep those guys around, their names describe their fighting, bland

Yeah these guys just aren't top flight comp. Make way for newcomers to the division. Struve, Grove, Dos Santos. Nobody has mentioned these guys. They are new but give them a chance. Look at what Dos Santos did in his first fight.

I feel like the UFC is lacking solid heavyweights as it is so cutting the ones you already have is a bad idea in my opinion. The UFC needs to pick up guys like Overeem, Kharitonov hell they could even bring Mirko back or Buentello like these guys may not win every time but they sure as hell put on some good fights. After they do that I could understand letting go the heavyweights you have that just arent cutting it but until then I think its a bad idea.

I agree that they need to pick up some of these guys but keeping these two guys is never a good idea. These guys just make the UFC HW divison look worse not the same and definitely not better. There is no reason to keep people that are not entertaining and have no potential of even being gatekeeper level.
The way these guys make the UFC look better is if they go to Affliction or Strikeforce and win there fights, just showing that even people that fail in the UFC are better than most fighters outside of the UFC

all these cuts are fine by me, however Clementi is alright but... what can you do, he wouldnt have gone any further then he did
now they need to cut nate mohr, gamburyan to wec at 145, jeremy horn PLEASE cut horn, jess liaudin if he hasnt been cut yet, james lee, antonio mendes, michael patt after he loses his next fight to vera tim mckenzie after he loses to aaron simpson, jason tan if he hasnt been canned yet, mike wessell if he hasnt been yet, ed herman if he loses to Loiseau-i like him but...a 3-5 record with 3 losses in a row would not be good and then a few guys from the last ultimate fighter

Lol... if they didn't cut Evanson I would be shocked. He has had a tough draw, but he got absolutely manhandled by Kongo and Barry. I saw him on the street after UFC 87 and he just didn't really look like a fighter. Nice guy though.
