The AP reports that BJ Penn and Georges St Pierre will be signing with UFC Gyms. The UFC will create signature gyms branded with the fighters names that would offer the fighters royalties on the usage of their names in conjunction with the gym. The UFC are at times heavy handed in their business dealings with their fighters, but the type of structure mentioned is encouraging and looks to be expanding the revenue pie in a way that benefits both the company and the fighters. Kudos to the UFC for this:
LAS VEGAS—The Ultimate Fighting Championship has signed deals with two of its top fighters to give them signature gyms in a chain of fitness clubs planned by the mixed martial arts league.
UFC President Dana White said Thursday that the gyms will be named for B.J. Penn and Georges St-Pierre, scheduled to fight Saturday in Las Vegas for the UFC welterweight title.
White says the fighters will be paid royalties from the gyms whether they are fighting or not.
Mark Mastrov, a former 24 Hour Fitness CEO working to open the new clubs, says the fighters’ gyms will be open by the end of the year in Penn’s native Hawaii and St-Pierre’s hometown of Montreal.

This will only benefit the stars of the UFC (St. Pierre, Penn, Couture, Liddell, Lesnar, etc). Its good to see the company expanding quickly and becoming more and more mainstream, but this is only gonna benefit a handful of fighters.

The concept is pretty cool, and it's nice to see (at least on the surface) that they're taking care of their guys. But my concern is that these gyms will become a fad over time and expand into watered-down marketing ploys rather then actual training/education facilities.
I guess the only question is...how long before we see a Brock Lesnar signature brand gym in Minnesota? Tractor tires and extreme cow-tipping for everyone!

yeah for now, but eventually you will have other name and other stars.
But i can't imagine a " Gabe Ruediger UFC gym "though, would not be a good thing !!

I could see this as a great retirement pension for the top stars in the UFC...They can go on to train and corner fighters once their fighting days have passed them by. Odds are that these gyms will also have management who can help book local fights for their talent... Maybe this becomes a way to usher in an infrastructure for Minor League MMA.

It's funny that you say that. I read somewhere that they will be including some of the nontraditional training equipment that we often see the fighters train with...one of which was tractor tires.

Damnit that's some of the funniest stuff I've read in a long time.
Let's be fair though- I'm pretty sure they were training distance running and endurance during the off-season.
I want desperately bad to insert a Travis Lutter signiture gym reference here...But I'd probably take it too far.
