“The sauna helps with rejuvenation between practices. We boil the water, then we get the steam. We get massages and beat each other with branches. It helps get rid of all the lactic acid. It helps with restoration so you can start the week full of energy.”

– The last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight title, Fedor Emelianenko, reveals a bizarre (and perhaps antiquated) recuperative practice that he and his primary training partner, Kirill Sidelnikov, often rely on to stay fresh after training sessions. The sauna is located in a rundown house in Emelianenko’s hometown of Stary Oskol, Russia. The odd-looking procedure was demonstrated through fogged glass during the 60-minute “Baddest Man on the Planet” special, which aired on FOX Sports Net (FSN) this evening. If you missed the show, go watch it. Fedor is unlike any other major mixed martial arts fighter in the world on so many different levels. It’s remarkable, really.

yeah I thought it was really good, thankfully they kept the jay glazer calling him "fader" to a minimum. "beat each other with branches" makes it sound a lot more dramatic than it is, it's basically like a massage using a branch.

I thought it was okay. It was really interesting but the production was very poor. I thought they spent way too much time on making him seem mystical I would have preferred more time on his accomplishments and training. This video was meant for the person that hasn't heard of him before and it really didn't showcase his skills.

If I was a noob, this video would not make me want to watch his fights.

I thought I read somewhere that Fedor retained the rights to his videos.

A lot of spiritual rituals call for "beating" of the flesh with a stick/branch/bundled leaves. maybe its a way of relaxation via a religous act.?????????????????

It's a Russian thing. I had a friend that also went to Russian bathhouses and did the same thing.

But beating each other with branches just sounds wrong. It's more of a slapping down. Increases blood flow to the skin, muscles, etc... or so they say.

From what I hear Russian steambaths are pretty popular....I watched Eastern Promises.. ;)
