Eight Winning Losers of 2008

By Danny Acosta
Sherdog.com

Borrowing from a favorite Karate High School song, fighters can either believe "no one remembers second place" or "winning isn't everything" when they fall short of victory. In a sport where defeat afflicts everyone not named Fedor Emelianenko, it seems wise to believe the latter.

Leonard Garcia made his name smiling under a barrage of punches from Roger Huerta at UFC 69, some 19 months before he became known for waylaying Jens Pulver. Every year, a select group of mixed martial artists experiences victory in defeat. Here's the graduating class of 2008.

Interesting piece. Well written and a great idea.

Interestingly enough, I went through the first five fighters on that list saying, "Oh, I picked him to win, I picked him. Yup, him too." The only ones that I didn't pick were Miura, Fitch, and Hazelett, I believe. But those performances make me much more likely to pick those guys in the future.

I don't know about fitch, he proved he is tough as nails but he didn't prove he could hang with the best.

Paul Taylor is my number one winning loser for 2008. he truly won me over as a fan with his exciting fights that never leave me touching the back of my seat. ever since the Marcus Davis fight i really started to pay attention tot Taylor, and despite his losses in 2008 he has made a great name for himself. hell, i think his FOTN bonuses alone tripled his salary.

Uh...he did hang with the best. Battling with GSP for 5 rounds to a decision loss qualifies as such.
