The news was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Sunday by Lister's management team at Haymaker's Empire.

According to his manager, Lister requested the release and the UFC granted his leaving the organization. The former Abu Dhabi champion is already in talks with several promotions, including Dream and Affliction, for a new deal.

Probably the best thing for Dean at this point. He will be able to get a fresh start away from the UFC and hopefully round out his game.

"Requests release....."

My guess is the conversation went more like this:

"You can't fire me...I quit!"

True he was probably going to be released. I think the UFC has a lot of respect for Dean Lister though and showed some actual class in giving it a different spin, as opposed to a fighter reading about himself in a forum that he's been released <cough> Fabricio Werdum.

Good for him, UFC wasn't taking him anywhere basically because he is not good enough. He is better than most but he can't beat the top 4 or 5 guys in the division.

You know, SOME fighters actually know and comprehend when their time is done at the place they are at. Dean is a smart man and great fighter, the level of competition in the UFC for his weight class was just to high for him. It's very probable and I DO think that it was his decision.

That may be true, but you really can't argue with the fact that Dean was probably going to be released anyway. The UFC is making some serious roster cuts right now, and they can't really keep a guy who is a gatekeeper at best and was recently embarrassed. Not only that, but he's a one dimensional fighter that can be exposed by even an average standup fighter.

Please note that I didn't say that he sucks or that he is the worst fighter out there. He's just not cut for the UFC and I'm thinking that they probably told him that he wasn't going to stay on the roster, so he just asked for his release. A "you can't fire me, because I quit" type of thing probably did take place.

I like Dean, so I hope he does well somewhere else, but it didn't look like he was going anywhere fast in the UFC. I hope he really improves his standup, since that's the main thing between him and success, but if taking that ass kicking from Arona didn't motivate him, I doubt anything will.

I dont think Lister could have hung with UFC's growing MW division. I also dont see Dean coming back unless he improves his skills and gets some big wins and finishes.

I think Dean is 4-2 in the UFC, I dont think they forced him out....but it may be for the best.

his ground game is very good, and he has a good chin...but I dont see him m aking a huge impact in the UFC MW division...he may do good if he joins up with Affliction.. I could see him maybe beating Lindland...

All that AND the fact that he's making signifigantly more then any other mid-range MW's in the UFC. I think money has more to do with it than anything. I'm sure he saw the writing on the wall and left with his dignity by asking for the resignation. My previous comment was more tounge-in-cheek than anything. He'll have plenty of continued success in straight grappling and instruction anyway.
