When you walk into a fight with a shiner you look like you already got your ass kicked.
This worked out just as well in this instance as McDonald sure as hell did nothing to help Rich look like he got his ass kicked. Anticipating this as a potential problem Rich, ever the resourceful fellow, opted to supply his own shinner.
