After weeks of speculation, the organization made the announcement early Monday morning via press release. FieLDS Dynamite!! 2008 is scheduled for Dec. 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

"New Year's Eve is rich in both history and tradition for combat sports in Japan," stated WAMMA Chief Operating Officer Michael Lynch. "FEG officials have put together an amazing night of fights and WAMMA is looking forward to recognizing the winner of the Aoki vs. Alvarez fight as our first-ever lightweight champion."

I'll bet the nerds at WAMMA are dearly hoping BJ loses to GSP.

Possibly...not that it matters, since the fight's at WW. I honestly don't see how they can crown a champ in this fight, since the last time I checked Penn was their #1 ranked guy. I understand that the UFC isn't playing ball, but doesn't crowning the #2 guy as champ defy everything the WAMMA belt is supposed to stand for?

WAMMA doesn't make sense to me at all... How are you going to have a champ that doesn't really defend his belt? It's not like the WAMMA org is going to be able to do this without the involvement of the UFC. Does the UFC guys not count or could you lose your belt without losing a fight due to some other org having a fighter who goes on a win streak? It seems like they want to be a shadow org that ranks the top in the world (FightMatrix.com) without having to put up the money for the fights. BOOO WAMMA!!!!

I like the idea WAMMA is going for , but like everyone says its pointless without the UFC being involved.

Any BJ loss would add legitimacy to the WAMMA lightweight belt. The belt though is pointless if they have BJ ranked #1 now.

The Fedor/Arlovski fight (I believe) will have the WAMMA title on the line. Is Arlovski the "undisputed" best heavyweight fighter in the world if he catches Fedor with a flash knockout? Nope.

I think WAMMA chooses when the belt is on the line. So basically the winner of Aoki/Alvarez could possibly never defend the title again.

Exactly, which is why it makes no sense to me. Now if the UFC was open to cross organizational fights this would be awesome and totally legit. Until that day it's pointless.

i don't understand WAMMA at all. what gives them the authority to crown "undisputed world champions"? i think the whole idea is impossible to achieve in a world that is not Utopian and i don't take any of their actions seriously.

I honestly don't care about this WAMMA title business... I'm just happy I get to see this fight...

Alvarez is by far my favourite fighter and I'm really pulling for him to win this... and then hopefully in the next year we'll see him fight BJ Penn

I think I finally figured out where WAMMA is coming from with this, while having BJ at #1 on their rankings.

The winner of this fight will surpass BJ as #1, especially because BJ won't even be fighting at this weight class for several months, maybe upwards of 10 if he faces Alves at WW next.

Even if Penn losses it is still pointless as the fight isn't even a LW fight. Wamma is a joke! This is one of the problems with boxing now is there are so many third party company's like Wamma that there are 20 belts for each weight class floating around. To top it off there is so many different weight classes that no one is sure who is a champ and who isn't. Wamma is just another way for outside company's to get their hands on money that isn't theirs to start with.
