For the first time in Sportsnet history, a mixed martial arts fighter has been named Canadian Athlete of the Year.

Montreal's Georges St-Pierre capped a championship 2008 by receiving Sportsnet's coveted honour, beating out hockey player Jarome Iginla, Paralympian Chantal Petitclerc, tennis player Daniel Nestor and baseball player Justin Morneau.

Just a note, GSP won in a landslide receiving 89% of the vote. I'd like to thing the playground had a part in that.

Wow!

That's really cool! I was hoping it would be close but I didn't think he'd pull it off this year. I'm sure he garnered a large portion of his votes from Quebec and the east of Canada. I put mine in from the West

GSP is a freak athlete, no other can do what he can do. To the fact that he is so well rounded in all of his body.

No doubt GSP is one of the most Athletic Fighters in MMA but Akiyama has to be the most Athletic guy I have ever seen in MMA, between him Fedor, Kid and St. Pierre. All are phenominal Athletes though
