As you may know already, UFC fighter Corey Hill is looking at a 12-18 month recovery time for injuries suffered against Dale Hartt at UFC Fights For The Troops. Presumably the UFC's health insurance is paying for his surgery and rehab, but Corey has a family (a wife and three children) to support. So his teammates at Gracie Tampa have started a get well fund to help out:
Gracie Tampa Page IMPORTANT: The link to the PayPal page for the fund MUST be accessed through this link. I tried direct linking to it and clicking through links on BloodyElbow, they do not work. An error screen comes up instead.
Big touch of gloves to BloodyElbow for posting this and bringing it to our attention. They also add this:
Do what you can.
UPDATE: For those who don't feel professional athletes merit assistance, lets remember that Corey gets paid $8000 per fight (plus $8000 win bonus) and only fought three times this year, going 1-2. That's $32,000 gross, not net. After he pays his trainers, fees, etc, I'd be surprised if he brought home $25,000.
He won't be working in the UFC next year and I doubt his job prospects are particularly good until he recovers from having his shin bone snapped in half.
These guys fight for our entertainment. Have some MMA community spirit.
I know times are tough for a lot of us but just like the FFTT fundraiser, if we all give only $5 it adds up quickly and every little bit will help. Like him or hate him, let's all do what we can and help out a fellow fighter in need!
Edit: I just made a $10 donation and I encourage as many of you as possible to match or even exceed that!

There should be some kind of "major injury clause" guaranteeing 100K or something if they are injured during a fight that'll last more than say a year.
A guy like Shogun can do seminars and run his gym, but these younger, lower guys are screwed.

If that comes into play, let me know. I'll do my absolute best to get into the UFC and become horribly injured.

I don't think he was making light of it, just pointing out the problem with having a clause that pays someone more to get hurt than to do their job.
I agree that there should be a "injury pay" clause that pays a large percentage of what a fighter would make during the time they are healing.

I don't know... Personally I have a hard time feeling sorry for the guy. I think this is the result of lack of foresight on Corey's part about something that seemed like an eventuality to me. We all saw what Rob Emerson did to his leg with like 4-5 decent leg kicks during TUF. I just don't see how you can expect to come in at 6'4 weighing 155 pounds fighting against professional athletes and expect your body to be able to take the punishment it needs to be able to take to last in this sport.
He's in the wrong weight class, and if his body can't put on any more mass I think he's in the wrong sport. Dude needs to drink some milk and eat some steak. It's not an insult at all, it's just honest and realistic, I don't see how his legs can possibly take more than a few solid kicks before the same thing happens again... there's no padding around them, he's getting kicked almost directly on the bone.

I pretty much agree with Aether. Hill has to consider if MMA is the sport for him. Maybe Boxing would work. When I first saw Corey on TUF...I thought he was way too tall for the weight class. I also noticed his legs were way too skinny..and the thought of one of his leg's snapping did cross my mind. I figured it might happen on the receiving end though. I do feel bad for him in some ways though. That had to really, really hurt...and I would imagine it still does somewhat. As for a fund? Maybe the UFC ought to throw down some. It is simple to me really. A fighter gets hurt, he misses a good amount of time...he should be paid for any fights missed due to that injury. If Corey is out 12 to 18 months...that is roughly 4 to 6 fights for him that he will miss. Pay him for those..or some negotiated resemblance. I do feel bad for the dude but most of America including myself is in or under the poverty level. Maybe that's one reason Jeff Monson did what he did! Which I thought was totally awesome.

If you can watch it Saturday consider investing in it. Only $9.95 on online PPV and $1 for every buy goes to the fund.
