Does anyone throw the rear hand hook?
I'm naturally orthadox but switch between that and southpaw.
I throw jabs, straights, crosses, overhands and uppercuts.
Never really thrown a rear hand hook, as it feels so un-natural.
What're your opinions?

You stay on your rear foot toe first off. You use that toe to pivot(twist) Most power shots you throw should be thrown from the body. That means youre twisting your body to throw the hooks. uppercuts you simply twist a different way.

Your entire body should be twisting.

You pivot from your toe, twist the hips, put some ass behind it for power, the the shoulder line twists.

Look up hooks on youtube and look for boxing links. Those are the ones you want because boxing exaggerates the twist motion when you see demos.

You're probably just throwing arm punches straight from the muscles and shoulders. That's a no no.

Once you get used to the awkward body motions you will telegraph them less, and they will be an instinctual part of you. Throw overexaggerated loopp shots at a heavybag for about 2 months and you'll get used to them.

No no no. Not what I meant, I know all that.
I just don't throw hooks with my rear hand. I was wondering if other people did.
And how they liked it and how well it works in a match.

If there's an opening and I'm in tight throwing bombs with my hips squared up, why not? Although 99% I won't look for something like that. I'd rather throw an uppercut

I rarely use the right hook. For me it's mostly overhand right, or cross. I hate the right hook.

Exactly. Only time I use the right hook is when i'm southpaw. those are two of my favorite punchs btw.

I use it occasionally if my opponent is overcompensating in his defense. It was used very nicely by Wladamir Klitshko in his boxing match with Hasim Rahman last Saturday--Rahman was on the ropes keeping a high guard and got popped pretty cleanly by a punch he wasn't expecting.

If you are the taller fighter, the rear hand hook is very effective against someone trying to come in on you, as it is really the only hook that is going to work when he takes away your breathing room. Doesn't matter if they are trying to shoot or blitz, you'll catch'em right behind the ear.

You're right, it does feel a little akward.

I love the right hook. It's probably one of my most effective punches. I don't use it a lot but I like slip the jab to the outside, and come back with a right hook, or left hook body, right hook head.

I know you're supposed to keep your hooks tight technically, but I like to let my right hook hang a little loose and wide, because you can generate a lot of power the further the hook has to travel. Kind of a slower punch but it comes out awkward and hard to see, and lands behind the ear often.
