I suppose I'd call it "pop", but usually I refer to it by name, Fanta, Sprite, Coke, Pepsi etc

Actually, I can't remember the last time I asked for a "soda" or a "pop". If I'm ordering sugar water, you better believe it's going to be Coke. So I just ask for a Coke. If the establishment serves Pepsi, they will generally ask if Pepsi is OK. I will then say "no", and order an iced tea.

I have lived in MA, VT and ME, and none of these states say pop from what I have encountered, so I don't know why some people are saying Northerners say pop. I have only heard mid-westerners calling it pop.

Dude what the hell are you talking about. Nobody says pop in MA. I live in RI and work in MA and I have never ever heard a local say pop. You must live on the border of western MA or something.
I never said anythign about MA............ where ever that is........ Maine (or is that ME) im sorry massuchetes maybe? Gotta say you guys got way too many states just combine some for christ sakes.

see im in the midwest and depending on where you are they might say pop or soda, heck the little kids say sodapop.
also in most restaurants across the country, if you ask for a coke or a pepsi, they just give you what they have, even if its generic.
