For a lot of fighters, seven months between bouts may feel like an awful long time. But when you’ve been through a purgatory of nearly two very uncertain years between fights—time spent rehabbing a bum back and restructuring a shattered nose—seven months of relative quiet between action can seem fast and furious.

That’s why when Nate “Rock” Quarry is asked about ring rust heading into his UFC 91 bout with Demian Maia, you can hear him mumble under his breath . . . ring rust, shmring rust.

“This is actually really good pacing for me,” says the rejuvenated 36-year-old middleweight. “After a fight I like to take a little time, rest, relax, let the body heal up, remind myself why I train so hard and take care of my little girl [8-year-old Ciera]—maybe take her on vacation or something to show her my appreciation for putting up with me working so hard for the last three months.”

I really, really like Quarry as a fighter. But he's facing a former world champion jiu-jitsu player in this fight. Sure, he has a puncher's chance, but if this fight goes to the ground, it's over.

Maybe one day we'll get to keep seeing Quarry as a full-time trainer.

i really believe Quarry has a great chance in this fight. even though Maia has outstanding BJJ his takedowns are lackluster. Quarrys stand up is no question better than Maia's and i think he will be able to keep it standing and get the KO. you're right though if it touches the mat the fight is over.

That's the dirtiest sounding headline I've seen in a while.

Quarry has good Muay Thai but Maia has been training with Wanderlei and has been looking really good, he's a natural and I have a gut feeling you're going to see how his striking is in this next fight.

I think Quarrys going to Knock Maia out. His wrestling is very good, whereas maias is almost none existant. Dont get me wrong, im not writing Damian off, if it goes to the ground, Nates only chance is to try and ride the round out. I just dont think its going to hit the mat.

The question is how good are maia's takedowns and how good is quarry's takedown defense?

Since the fight starts out standing, im leaning towards quarry, but it's still a toss up for me. I think quarry can rock maia on the feet but we will see. It's going to be a game time decision for me on that fight.

Everyone has a puncher's chance, but I think this will be the last time we see Nate in the cage.

A punchers chance? You gotta be kidding me. Your either really overrating maia, or dont like quarry. He has better striking and wrestling than maia. If anything, in terms of the stand up at least, its maia who only has the punchers chance.

I actually have a lot of respect for Nate as a fighter, but he will not win this fight.

You mean Nate's pillow punching?

Everyone seems to forget about this cool technique used in MMA from time to time.

It's called PULLING GUARD.

Don't think Maia can take him down, remember he likes to pull guard.

Im taking Maia, espically since i think quarry is overrated. The only real halfway legit fighters he has beat is Pete Sell, and Pete Sell.

He's never fought a submission guy like Maia. He's fought all strikers.

The ROCK has good stand up and fast hands. But Maia IMO is going to be Silva's next legit contender. His BJJ is above all. His stand up is coming along, working on his MT with Wandy helps alot.
