Mir is not a huge underdog in that fight. A guy like Herring TKO'd Nog , yeah he forgot to finish him, probably brain damage but Nog vs Mir is not a mismatch at all.
I don't see Nog submitting Mir at all and this fight will probably be a stand up battle and both of them are not huge striker so i think it can go to the limit , as long as Mir's conditioning is good .
But Herring is far and away a better striker then Mir. Nog acctually has pretty good boxing, and Mir's isn't good.

is Mir and Nog considered the top two HWs in BJJ? or the in the top 5? i think Nog for sure has to be in the top two, anyway they are both world class, and i would love to see 5 rounds of JJ, watching the HWs do BJJ as well as they do is just so cool, how well and smooth they move and transition on the ground is awesome! IMO. however the problem i see is that Nog is better at every aspect, (stand-up, take downs, take down defense, ground game, ect...) so on paper its very hard to see Mir win, however stranger things have happened. im stoked for this fight.

I think they key for Mir to win this fight, as some already said is strike from the outside, not only that but also to outwrestle Nog. If he can take down Nog, I can see him pulling a decision, Nog is a BJJ wizard, but Mir isnt far behind, and i really dont see Nog pulling a sub on Mir unless Mir is rocked.
Problem from Mir is that he also seems to have horrible TK defense, so I'm sure Nog will take it down too, and than its a matter of who spends the more time on top and who do more etc...
Still, i'm taking Nog round 3 KO/TKO.

My thoughts exactly. Nogueira is a decent boxer, so I think Mir needs to stay outside or get into the clinch, and avoid the in-between. Tim Sylvia did his damage with his hands, but he had superior reach, and Mir won't. Kicks could be useful, as some have said, and Nogueira doesn't have a wrestler's shoot. I agree that Mir probably has enough grappling acumen to avoid a submission, the challenge for him will be in not fighting defensively if/when it goes to the ground. I think Mir needs to be assertive, if not outright aggressive, and have enough confidence to attack. Fedor's ground-and-pound against Nogueira was predicated on the certainty that he wouldn't fall into a submission while inside Nog's guard. Mir obviously isn't on Fedor's level, but I don't think he'll get very far if avoiding submissions is foremost on his mind.

I'd say top 5. Top two would probably be Roger Gracie and Nogueira. The way I have them ranked goes 1. Roger Gracie 2. Nogueira 3. Werdum 4. Gonzaga 5. Mir

i actually don't think we know how good mir's boxing is right now, i mean we havn't seen him stand up for a very very long time - sans his annihilation by vera.
maybe his stand up is on the same level as nogs now, (doubt it) we wont know tillt he fight!

Very hard to know for sure where he is with his Boxing and also his kicking, leg kick can be a good way to slow Nog down specially if you are not afraid to be on your back if the guy grab your leg.

Definitely what he doesn't need to do is ignore him and make him mad.
... or maybe not. I can't remember a fight where Nog's opponent started beef. What does an angry Nog even look like?

I actually believe Mir's stand up is better. Mir made a great point awhile ago about how he is going to use leg kicks as a factor against Nog. By standing and keeping distance with kicks and coming in close while clinched against the cage, he minimizes his chance of being taken down.
I dont think Nog will be finished, he has a good chin and even Mir isnt subbing him. Ground game goes to Nog no doubt but it doesnt mean he is subbing MIr. Mir knows proper defense and offense to hold his own on the ground.
In the end, I see it going to a decision and if Mir stays up he wins, if it goes to the ground more, Nog wins

I don't know about the "leg kick theory." Nog trains with Anderson. You'd think he knows how to defend a leg kick these days.

Good conditioning and great wrestling/takedowns. Which means I think the best stradegy for Mir, as boring as it sounds, is too LNP. I mean no disrespect to Mir, he's a great fighter but Big Nog just out does him in every area. If it becomes a ground fight, Mir I think could hang on in the 1st, maybe even the 2nd, but I think he'll fade in the 3rd and that's when Nog would finish him with his better BJJ wit a sub or TKO from GNP. But even on the feet I think Big Nog would KO him in 2 maybe 3.
I think he should train with Sean Sherk or Tito Ortiz and just work their GNP techniques. I think he might have a strength/wrestling advantage maybe? Especially if he trained with great wrestlers for this But I do think he could maybe take Nog down and keep him in guard, and maybe throw elbows for 3 rounds. Cuz I think he good JJ would keep him out of trouble while using GNP in Nog's guard. Then just stay out of trouble for the 4th and 5th rounds and stay defensive.
I just can't see him winning though cuz Nog is jus better in every area. I see Nog TKOing him 3. I think Mir has heart and won't go down without a fight, but I think Big Nog is just too good for him. But anythings possible as we've seen, but it's a long shot. Should be a good fight though.
