This thread actually lays out what is wrong with hip hop in general. You have a slim margin of people who understand the genre and can seperate the good from the bad, alot of people who only know what has been force fed to them via mainstream media when shit was really poppin and then the children who are so over saturated with all kinds of bullshit that they have Lil Wayne as the GOAT and have never heard of Brother Ali.

They love some Timbaland or some Polow The Don but have no clue who Statik Selektah or Jake One are. They might **** with DJ Premier or Rakim, not that there is anything wrong with that, but they still can't dig up a Madlib joint or a Blueprint record.

Lil Wayne T Pain Akon TI 50 Jeezy Kanye....ya they make hot shit but I don't think kids can see past that. Makes it hard because no matter what it really is (Pop) it's still falling under the rap (hip hop) umbrella and tarnishing the whole culture.

Personally I love hip hop first and foremost but these days it has changed. My hip hop is MIA, Santogold, Dubstep, Glitch shit, UK Grime all for the same reasons i started to like hip hop. Because it was different.

That's commercial radio, period. Not just in terms of hip-hop/rap. I've only heard what's been "force fed" to me because that's all I choose to hear. Like I said, I'm just not into it all that much. Certainly not enough to hunt down what's supposedly good by your standards.

Everybody's got their something. You can't hate on someone for liking something you don't.

Here's a top 10 list for you:

1. Kool G Rap (illest cat to ever touch a mic, without a doubt. Master of the rhyme scheme.)

2. LL Cool J (did the ladies' joints and the street joints. Most old school heads within' the industry and the culture will tell you he's the best to ever do it.)

3. Rakim

4. Big L

5. Jay-Z

6. Big Daddy Kane

7. Chuck D

8. 2Pac

9. Big Pun

10. Nas

honorable mentions: The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube, Lauryn Hill, Guru, Mos Def, MJG, Tego Calderon, Chino XL, Kanye West, Q-Tip, Prodigy, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Ras Kass, Cassidy, Spice 1, Too Short, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, AZ, B- Real, Cormega, Sick Jacken, Andre 3000, Big Boi, Lord Finesse, Redman etc. etc.

well i guess id say ice cube, him and chuck d both carry a lot of power in their voices and i think cube has run the gamut of rap from gangsta to pop.

as far as lyrics go KRS-ONE, mos def and tribe are all sensible rappers that dont just talk about money and bitches, a lot of their songs have a positive message and i appreciate that.

I forgot about People Under The Stairs and Jurassic 5. A buddy turned me on to them a few years back.

I just find it funny that you choose people like Brother Ali, Statik Selectah and Jake One as examples to prove your point.

Brother Ali is just an average emcee... he's alright but nothing really stands out about him. I would rather hear somebody like Jae Millz, Cassidy or Papoose instead of him.

Statik and Jake's beats are dope but nothing great either. I would rather hear a blazing beat from Just Blaze, DJ Muggs or Pete Rock over them any day. And yes I am very familiar with the "underground" scene. Madlib is dope but I couldn't really get into The Lootpack records because of the emcee or a lot of his projects.

Hip-Hop and Rap is about the streets... I can't stand internet heads who try to regulate what "real" is and what real "isn't". Rakim is the essence of Hip-Hop, G Rap is the essence of Hip-Hop not Atmosphere and Sage Francis. (not dissing them either but their die-hards fans are guys who have listened to Hip-Hop for maybe 5 years at the best and couldn't tell me a Show & AG joint from a Beatnuts record.) I'm speaking about underground fans in general not you personally nastshabast.

I also saw somebody mention Jean Grae... this chick raps from a notebook live on stage. That ain't an emcee... I would rather hear Remy Ma over her any day. I remember Grae from her days as What What from the group Natural Resource.

I would rather hear Joe Budden, Saigon, Cormega or Juelz Santana over some boring underground garbage like Little Brother.

I do agree bullshit like Soldier Boy and Yung Berg has to go though. It's complete trash.

my fellow Latino heads need to check for an emcee by the name of Sinful... he's probably the best rapper to flip it in Spanish not named Tego Calderon.

You gotta add King Sun, KRS-One, Masta Ace, WC, Twista, Jeru Da Damaja, Pharoahe Monch, Bun B, Posdenous and Sean Price to my list above as well.

Brother Ali
Joell Ortiz
MF Doom
Q Tip
Andre 3k
Devin
Cee Lo
KRS
Slug
Evidence
Sean Price
El P
Termanology
Reks
Roots Manuva
Wiley
Dizzee Rascal

these are some of the cats who gets it done....hip hop ain't dead.....it's just different

It's crazy to see somebody mention Joell, a very good friend of mine. He's been grindin' forever and barely getting noticed now. He's good peoples.

It's sad to see what El-P has become, Funcrusher Plus by Company Flow was such a hard record.

I was tryin to stay away from the obvious and spread some love to some newer artists who I think are doin it right.

Ali is far from an average MC in my opinion. Joe Budden and Saigon are both beasts but I'll keep LB and you can have Mega and Jae Millz back.

I was pretty baked when I wrote that too and I was just frustrated with the whole way the thread was goin and I had to weigh in.

I hope you don't throw me in with the internet heads regulatin shit. It's not the case at all. I have an open mind when it comes to music, but for me personally, seeing people with top ten list like

Lil Wayne
Game
Crooked I
Jim Jones
Techn9ne
Lloyd Banks
Flo Rida
Rick Ross
TI
Papoose

is just like an MMA fan seein a top ten list like

Chris Leben
Diego Sanchez
Kimbo Slice
Brock Lesnar
Kalib Starnes
....well, you get the point
