It wasn’t just any Saturday at the Tristar martial arts academy, in Montreal, Canada.

The Jiu-Jitsu class, with around 50 participants, was more crowded than usual. But the UFC welterweight champion, Georges Saint-Pierre, suspected nothing.

And he was moved when medical researcher and holder of several Jiu-Jitsu titles Bruno Fernandes promoted him to the status of black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

“This was the high point in my career,” an emotional Saint-Pierre confessed, when laying out the three happiest moments of his life:

“When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”

The promotion echoed in New York and, Renzo Gracie, who has taught Jiu-Jitsu to the Canadian star in the past before his collision course with Renzo student Matt Serra, approved:

“He more than deserves it. This was excellent new for the fight world,” said the teacher.

To Gracie Barrra black belt Fernandes, who has been living in Canada for the last few years, where he earned his PhD and researches cancer treatments, and thus has been teaching the martial arts phenomenon for years, it was a great honor to fasten the black belt and say:

“Welcome to the club!”

It's a nice personal accomplishment. Congrats GSP. However, as far as MMA goes, I think this is nothing more then a formality since submissions arn't really his forte' anyway.

Either way, big props GSP!

i agree except the best mma wreslting thing
there have been a couple who stand out in my mind that are better
the ability to take a shot or "the shoot" (for the non-wreslter) is not indicative of a good wreslter

you are forgetting the ground control (which gsp has) and the clinch which gsp imo doesnt have nearly the best of

wait and see.. if silva will clinch with him.. then he doesnt appose a threat to a high caliber fighter with his wreslting
now.. idk if anderson can get a clinch on gsp, but if you noticed... silva wouldnt clinch with hendo..

the clicnh is HUGE in wreslting... couture and some of the asian guys i've seen have it all around the best

that is my only argument..

other than that
war gsp kill them all.. i think he is gonna be better than silva in the end

and i think its awsome that gsp is in it.. that makes a statement for mma..

Congrats Rush!!

GSP is so rarely put on his back, his jits rarely comes into play. Granted, he used it against Hughes, Trigg, Strasser,, and Spratt, but usually he ends fights by TKO. I believe some ppl underestimate his jits because he doesn't have to use it much. But it's there if he needs it. After not wrestling in high school or college, he's already the best mma wrestler in the WW division and among the best in all of mma. His success rate with take-downs is like 80%, and his success rate of defending the take-down is, I think around 70%.
With his constant evolution in this sport, it's going to be very hard for any WW to beat him, and I don't think BJ can come up and beat him. GSP's a different fighter than when they fought the first time, and although GSP took some damage early on in that fight, I agree w/the judges decision; GSP won.
I would like to see GSP/Silva. With Silva's technical, accurate striking, it'd be hard to beat him. I picture GSP taking him down, and after Silva taking some GnP damage, he'll submit GSP (IMO). But, I think Rush would give Silva a tougher fight than he usually gets, and it's not out of the realm of possiblity that GSP upsets him.

Once again, congratulations to Rush. He's a very smart fighter. He travels around and trains w/various ppl, including Greg Jackson. He also trains in Canada and recently went to Brazil. You can be very tough and talented, but to be a great fighter, you also have to be smart. GSP is smart.

GSP's striking is NOT better than BJ's my god where are people getting this from. On the feet BJ already proved this fact. If your talking GNP sure but not overall.

who has BJ Penn KO'd in the last 5 years? thats what I thought, just Sherk. LMAO and GSP did it better and faster.

GSP KO'd Hughes, totally dom'd Fitch, Finished Serra. what more do u want?

just doing a jab all day doesn't win fights, its a good asset, but that alone doesn't win fights. GSP has amazing hands and kicks, his accuracy is pin point, and he picks his shots better than any other MMA Fighter I have ever seen.

BJ's only bet on winning the fight is taking GSP down, which I have no clue how BJ can do it
