In a statement released to MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday night, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz openly discussed his ongoing bout with back problems and his decision to have surgery to repair his back.

“I have made it though the last eight fights by physical therapy, methylprednisolone pills, and spinal injections for my last three fights,” he recounted. “I took it upon myself to get surgery in hopes that my fight career will jump back on track and I will be back to the explosive monster I always have been.”

He didn’t stop there, however. In his statement, Tito went on to claim that his former employer, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, denied the claims for medical coverage for his back.

“The kicker to this whole story is that the UFC denied my claim for coverage of my debilitating back injury obviously acquired in the Octagon,” he said. “After all of the battling, and allegiance I pledged to them, they now have stooped so low as to not give me the medical care I so desperately needed.”

Only 1 or 2 more losses and he'll be right in the "washup" league with Ken and Frank Shamrock. It's only a matter of time

No, Tito will never be "the old Tito." He had good wins, but when he had the title, Chuck was fighting the tougher competition. I give Tito credit, he was a damn good fighter, but he's nothing now. Tito needs to go into the porn industry with Jenna because he'll never do much as a fighter like he did when he was young. I don't believe he has the heart, and his cockiness and overall bad attitude has alienated him from many important contacts, as well as many fans. At one point, he tried to duck Chuck, claiming they were 'friends' and shouldn't fight, although he had and continued to talk crap about Chuck behind his back. Tito can go to another org, and make plenty of money, but I don't want to see him back in the UFC. He's just not the same as he was when he was young.

Very very true! Couldn't have said it better. His life style as well as his wife just doesn't fit the UFC. He'd do much better in Afflication so they can feed him a can or two. Hype him up and then make money off him. Or someday Tito vs Kimbo! lol He never really grew with the sport. He was part of the new breed 5-6 yrs ago but thats over and done with. Now there is even 2 newer breeds of fighters, Forest, Franklin and Hendo being that first breed of tough, full of heart with amazing cardio and a chin and last GSP, BJ and Spider being this newer breed of best at it all breed. I wonder whats next... what can be added to this sport to take it to the next level? who is that next level? i hope its not Junies kind bc then I'm done.

It's nice to see the UFC slam it back into Tito's face.

LOL...the claim was denied by AIG (very bottom of article) !!! He should re-submit after they get their BAILOUT money, maybe then they can afford to pay for his back surgery.

Especially after AIG just spent $440,000 on a spa/golf/luxery outing for some of their executives just days after being bailed out.
Rooms: $200,000
Golf: $7,000
Spa (facials, manicures, pedicures, massage, etc): $23,000
Food: $120,000
Tito's back: "we can't afford it"

You should really take Frank's name out of your post. Not only is he a legend but a great fighter and still one of the best out there today
