Following a successful run as International Fight League heavyweight champion, Roy Nelson suffered his first loss in his last six fights after he faced off against former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski at CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights.
MMAWeekly
I'm starting to think EliteXC might have wanted people to stand because they know they are presenting MMA to a wide variety of people, most of whom do not understand the ground game at all? Either way, they need to be off CBS ASAP.
If this is already posted please delete, I looked but not that hard.

i knew before the fight that if that situation happened, the fight would most likely be stood up. i figured Nelson wouldve known that too

I think the stand-up was debatable, but far from unanimously premature. He wasn't really active on the ground and wasn't even close to getting a sub.

I'm of the line of thinking that if you're mounted, in side control, or your back is taken, there should be no stand ups PERIOD.
I was very disappointed with the stand up, not that I think the fight would've ended any other way.

I would like to quote joe rogan here
"If a wrestler wants to take you down and hold you there for 3 rounds, TOUGH BALLS. Find a way to get out. I disagree with all stand ups."
That is not a paraphrase either

even worse of a standup than JT vs Kimbo
regardless that I woulda picked Nelson, still was a very very bad standup.
I dont remember the last time a fight had been stood up from side mount.

I was watching that fight, and really was in awe in how fast they stood that up. Yes he might have not gotten a submission, but he was in side control, and he just failed 1 submission attempt. No reason to stand it up so soon.
The fact is, he got Arlovski down, thats a feat in it self. Now from getting him down he went to side control, then after that tried a submission. After that submission maybe another 5-10 seconds at most it seems like (I haven't watched the fight a 3rd time so I cant recall if it was that long but didn't seem like it at all) and was stood up.
Now with all the kimbo / seth crap about how seth was hinted at standing up, and then the way this went down. I think many people think EliteXC doesn't wanna see a ground fight.
Do I really think he could have gotten a submission on arlovski? No not really, but the fact was he was down and it needs to stay down and arlovski needs to attempt to get out rather then just try and defend the submission. Maybe I am speaking this way cuase I am from a wrestling backround, anyhow I just dont think people should get the stand up so fast.

It sure looked premature to me. Both CBS events have had some crazy calls by the refs. JT lost by TKO while still on his feet. Nelson gets stood up from side control within a matter of seconds from just missing a submission.

i personally dont see how anyone who is in side control can be stood up, i dont see how anyone can say he was doing nothing, he was constantly trying to advance position. But everything that touches XC seems a little fishy to me...

This goes well past the Nelson stand up. I honestly think that ALL of the refs had a quota to meet for the number of times they had to say "Improve your position." I still can't believe how many times I heard that during the event. I was waiting for one of the refs to slip in into their rediculous fight intros...
Something like, "ok girls- we went over the instructions in your locker rooms. protect yourselves at all times, lets have a good clean fight, improve your position and let's show them what women's mma is all about."
For as often as it was said, you KNOW there was direction from Elite XC to keep things moving. Everything about that promotion is wrong. I'm completely done with the morbid curiosity of it all. I can't watch any more of that train wreck....ever.

I'm with Rogan on this one. It sucks getting LnP'd, but tough balls. There are KO and submission bonuses for a reason.
On another note it's just like I've said a million times before- Pride had effort to finish as one of their judging criteria... why can't the UFC and other MMA orgs adopt that???

I completely agree, miss the old Pride rules. Also if they had no stand ups those guys would be forced to more active because their Star value would be little. Those fighters wouldn't make the televised portion of events and for the most part would be either stepping stones or not around at all.

Agreed, EXC is horrific, awful, bad for MMA.
