The upside for Kimbo taking a fight vs. Petruzelli was financial |

The second-guessing regarding last night’s decision to substitute Seth Petruzelli in place of a medically disqualified Ken Shamrock in the main event of EliteXC and CBS’ “Saturday Night Fights” has already begun.
The main question being raised is why did Kimbo accept the fight considering there was little upside?
Well, I believe there was an upside for Team Kimbo and it was likely financial. While speaking with sources at the post-fight press conference for the event, they indicated to FiveOuncesOfPain.com that Slice received a “substantial” increase over the guarantee he was scheduled to make vs. Shamrock.
For a guy who used to fight unknowns in backyards for only a few thousand dollars, accepting a fight vs. Petruzelli probably made a lot more sense once EliteXC made him a financial offer he likely couldn’t refuse.

considering that petruzelli, while not as big of a name, was a substantial step up in competition, they should have given kimbo more cash. i think he will get his shot at shamrock next anyways.

Kimbos loss was needed, now maybe Shaw can give him some serious well paired fights, instead of feeding him Lambs for the slaughter.

and i agree.. but not so much that everyone has been a lamb.. they've all been has beens or "never will be's"
i would like to see kimbo come up threw the ranks like everyone else. stop using his name so early and let him become a real MM artist

I think the loss is good for Kimbo.. its a reality check.. he now knows he is not as good as the hype surrounding him.. maybe he can really get to focus on the training he needs. I am also now more interested in seeing Kimbo against someone like Ken... though it would have been nice to see ken fight..

Agreed, now maybe people will quit talking about him and he can go about his training like a 3-1 fighter. It's not his fault he was built into what he was, he just wants to make some money and develop, he's the first one to say he's not a top fighter at this point.

Kimbo Slice.....3 Wins 0 Losses 1 Mulligan
LOL, I don't know how Elite XC is gonna spin this one. Smashed in 14 seconds by the 5th or 6th best fighter from TUF that season. Seriously who gets knocked out with a jab to the orbital? Then trying to shoot in on the ref after.....haha too good. Then the CBS commentators pegging Petruzelli " the new Rocky" & greatest upset in MMA history...."

now he is going to get lambs for the slaughter for the next year or so.

I also believe the loss for Kimbo is an actual good thing. If he really is in it for the love of fighting he can now focus on just that. The hype should die down and he can actually focus on being a fighter instead of a celebrity.

kimbo will earn more fans from this, its up to him & his org to keep marketting himself in a good way. Americans love second chances for damn near anything & there's lots of peolple that will like him more if he comes back on a tear after his 1st loss

Thats how they are going to spin it but trust me Kimbo would be much better off if he knocked out Petruzelli in 14 seconds.
Ive been telling my freinds that know nothing about mma that Kimbo is a mediocre fighter at best forever and now they finally believe me. They have lost a lot of respect for him.

Not sure how much it took to sweeten the pot for Kimbo, but I hope he spends the money wisely and buys himself a new chin.

They shoulden't lose respect for him, how he handled himself after that fight was great and he deserves a ton of respect. Everyone can get caught, Cro Cop was caught in his hay day, Fedor's been tagged, Anderson silva was submitted by Ryo Chonan and a Sakuraba wanna be, it doesn't matter who you are in mma you will get caught, what matters is how you handle it when it does happen.
