I believe BJ Penn does, but who else?
Is it more that today's fighters know enough BJJ to defend a takedown attempt from even the best BJJ fighters, or that today's top BJJ guys are not that good at getting the fight to the ground on their terms?

One name
Jacare
Palhares did a pretty good job against Hendo, too

Check out the Jacare DREAM fights. He's one of the best bjj guys in mma and it looks like he really trained his takedowns. Good explosion and level changes.
Marquardt is awesome with takedowns(wrestling) too, but I guess he's not considered a pure bjj fighter.
As much as Hendo stuffed them, Palhares has good takedowns too from a pure bjj fighter standpoint.

I'll have to rewatch the Palhares fight.
What about Werdum and Gonzaga? Mir's takedowns seem lackluster. Almeida seemed to struggle badly against Cote. Filho - I haven't seen enough of him to judge.

All the names you listed have poor takedowns IMO

You really think so? I'm just not that impressed with Gonzaga's wrestling.

Gonzaga's problem is that he is to stubborn to realize he needs to put fights on the ground. when he wants to, he does have good TDs, but again he likes to try out his stand-up where he just goes for that head kick.
Of the JJ guys, i think Jacare has the best TDs and the best scramble submissions. Palhares comes in second because his double leg is predictable but once he grabs a hold of you he is like a pitbull and has good trips and slams. Maia has a bad shot and poor TD ability, Werdum's is just disgusting and he was lucky that Vera pretty much walked into that trip. Mir doesn't have the best shot either but for some reason his opponents always wind up on the ground due to poor game planning. Nick Diaz's TD ability is atrocious, however, Nate Diaz showed a lot of promise in his fight with Neer and i would say Nate's TD ability is up there.

Yes, I do.
When he fought Mirko, he took a hard kick in the body, and immediately jumped in his legs, was a beautiful take down this one..
After that, he fought Randy, well, Randy has one way better take down and wrestling..
When he fought Werdum, he gassed to fast and didn't try to take Werdum down, so this fight doesn't count.
Oblivious, i'm not putting him with Jacare, Palhares, and all those monsters there, but in my opinion he have a pretty good takedown..
One we can say too, is Fedor! I don't remember one fighter that he didn't take to the ground when he wanted..

Right, and I would have mentioned Fedor if it wasn't for the fact that he's a sambo fighter Around here you'll catch hell for calling him a JJ fighter.
Anyway, I think Gonzaga gets people down with mostly strength. Just like you I don't consider him to have a good shot/takedown compared to Jacare or Palhares. To me a good takedown is jacare and palhares, whereas a great takedown is GSP, Koscheck, and Couture

i would like to put Aoki in the category of great TDs as well

Few of the straight BJJ players have good takedowns. Ricardo Arona is one of the few that does. Penn's are pretty good as well.
Of course some hybrid guys like GSP, Joe Stevenson or Pelligrino do as well and there are plenty of sub guys with a background in judo or sambo that are good--but I don't think that's what's being asked here.

Really none, BJJ is a very takedown deficient art.
