Top welterweight contender Josh Koscheck could possibly meet up with Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fights for the Troops” during the three-hour Spike TV special that will take place from Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 10.

MMAmania.com has heard whispers about the solid 170-pound match up from several independent sources over the course of the last few days.

Koscheck has won nine of 11 bouts inside the Octagon since his stint on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) back in early 2005, transforming from a world class wrestler into a dangerous well-rounded fighter in less than three years.

He has faced top competition in the loaded division in his last five appearances, including a showdown with current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (he was not champion at the time). He lost that bout via three-round decision but won over a legion of new fans with the performance for being able to hang with the uber talented Canadian.

Koscheck has since defeated rising star Dustin Hazelett with a second round technical knockout at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” back in March and grizzled veteran Chris Lytle via bloodbath, er, unanimous decision at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” this past July.

Good match up but I really don't see how Koscheck could not win...just my opinion but yea he should win this by UD.

Jeesh though Koscheck has had some pretty rough fights for the past three I mean Dustin and then Lytle and if he beats Yoshida I think he deserves a title shot. Perhaps after he fights the winner of Sanchez and Alvez.

awesome match-up, this will kind of gauge where Yoshida stands..but also test Koscheck as well..

wonder how many fights they are planning on airing?? like a normal event? or is there gonna be other things going on..and some fights to.

it's a shame that Karo pulled a nerve before the last fight. I have a feeling that was going to be the best odds we see for YY. He'll be a heavy underdog to Kos, and rightfully so.

I don't want to see him lose, cause he's got all the potential in the world. But maybe a loss to Kos will keep his money line down a little for the next opponent.

I know this is off topic but beating Dustin, Lytle and even if he beats Yoshida i don't see how that qualifies as deserving a title shot. He should figth FItch (i know their are training partners but they are in the fight game so they should fight) and he beats him then yes he deserves a chance. I don't know if its just me but i don't think the UFC will give him a title shot if GSP its still the champ, plus he is definitly not a crowd favorite.

This merits a title shot imo becuase the only person he's lost to in his last 8 fights is the current champion. I don't see why the heck not. Dustin is a great opponent (better than most and Lytle is the same with YY not being a step down in competition at all.

He fights whose in front of him and beats them soundly. I see no reason why he shouldn't be given a title shot personally. but I do agree perhaps he should have to face the winner of Sanchez and Alves. Or the looser in the case that Alves wins and gets a title shot.

Karo didn't pull a nerve. He pulled a couldn't make weight. Kos will win though this is a tough matchup.

Kos should UD this one.

Another fight rumoured on this card, Dale Hartt vs Corey Hill should be interesting.

his fighting style before was lnp but hes changed that quite a bit really. he is more comfortable standing and against lytle he had some serious gnp.

i think kos would merit a title shot if he beats yoshida. that would be mclovin, lytle and yoshida. if diego beats alves i could see diego kos 2 because the bj gsp fight will be at end of jan and that could be a number 1 contender match although kos already beat him once. winner of diego/alves deserves a title shot (specially alves if he wins) but so does kos if he wins

In looking up Yoshida's record I noticed that Jon Koppenhaver is now officially "war machine" on Sherdog and wiki.
