EliteXC held their Conference Call today and it was quite a lively affair. In addition to the usual banter between Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice(during which Shamrock certainly held his own) there was an interesting comment made by Slice’s trainer Bas Rutten. Here’s the gist of it(not a direct quote):
Kimbo has much more skill than Brock Lesnar and feels he is a more well rounded fighter. Bas doesnt want to take anything away from Lesnar, but he feels Kimbo is just better.
Rutten has been known to be a straight shooter in the MMA world, but this statement is a hard one to justify, especially after Slice’s last performance. EliteXC CBS Saturday Night Fights takes place on October 4th and will feature Ken Shamrock returning to action against mainstream MMA fighter Kimbo Slice.
***Cmon Bas! that's not True***

I hate to disagree with Bas but Lesnar is a much better MMA fighter. Kimbo is strickly a puncher and has yet to prove otherwise. Lesnar has a serious ground game he jus needed to slow it down a bit and he did that very well against Herring, and in a stand up fight Lesnar can hold his own with anybody including Kimbo. Kimbo has along way to go before he will be equal to Lesnar in my opinion.

uhhhh that's kind of surprising to me. Usually Bas is pretty realistic with his comments, even if they involve someone who he is friends/training partners with. This comment is completely unrealistic. Kimbo isn't particularly good at anything, including standup. He hits hard but his technique is not very good and he has absolutely no groundgame. On the flip side, Lesnar probably hits harder than Kimbo AND has a top notch wrestling pedigree.
Sorry Bas but you're talking nonsense here.

I guess there is only one way to find out. I'd like to see Kimbo lay on the ground for an entire round with Lesnar on top, like he did in the Thompson. Only problem is, Lesnar will only need 1 minute to finish if his opponent is defending like Kimbo was.

Honestly, on some levels it might not be far from the truth considering Kimbo has probably been training longer than Lesnar in all aspects of MMA.
Lesnar doesn't have standup. Don't fool yourselves. Just cuz he can hit hard and most likely take a punch (thanks to being a 275+ lb. beast) doesn't mean he has standup skills. I guarantee you his combinations are lacking, defense is lacking, and head movement is pathetic. We just haven't seen anybody keep it standing with him yet. And please don't come back with that rhetoric talking about how nobody has stood with him because he's knocked them down so quick. That has everything to deal with who he's been fighting, them being so afraid of the takedown, and his gigantic size blessing him with natural unrefined power. It takes years and years to refine a good standup game and he simply hasn't had the time yet. At one point he may have it, but right now I would wager that in a straight boxing competition Kimbo would beat Lesnar.
However, Lesnar does have incredible wrestling skills. His cardio and physical shape seem to be superior to Kimbo's, and naturally due to the wrestling background I would have to give the JJ advantage to Lesnar as well.
So, while I disagree with Bas' assessment I could see his reasoning behind it. Which is funny that he would even say because I've personally heard Bas Rutten say that wrestling is the most important base.

I'll agree with you there. Stand up skill, Yes.

I don't think anyone in the thread said that Lesnar has better standup than Kimbo, sparky said he could hold his own, which is hard to verify, but not really the same as saying he's better. The fact is though that Kimbo's standup isn't good, and it's his biggest strength. He has no head movement and poor footwork. We haven't really seen Lesnar's standup so no one can say that it's better or worse, but he's clearly the faster and more powerful of the two.

Well no one may have been saying Lesnar had stand up, no one was willing to give Kevin the nod about it, all the post were just about how Bas is wrong. I bet Kimbo knows more in the (god help me, let me put on my flame retardant suit ) relm of jiu jitsu and submiission defense. Hell he has just been training longer. On that basis alone Bas is right that Kimbo is a more rounded fighter than Lesnar. All Lesnar does is throw those canned hams he calls hands around and hopes for the best. If he can knock em down or take em down, good then he'll sling his canned hams on the ground... REAL well rounded huh?

He can knock you down and keep you down, frankly that's all he needs if it works for him.

I think Bas needs to go back and rewatch how Thompson held Kimbo down for almost an entire round. Kimbo looked pretty turtle like off his back if I remember correctly. If Kimbo's ground game is so good and he's been training so long, why did he look awful on his back? Kimbo/Thompson is the only real fight of Kimbo's that we can gain any insight into his game, and he didn't look good. Lesnar would kill Kimbo in the first round, plain and simple.
Kimbo may have the advantage standing, but I would think that Lesnar has the edge everywhere else.

Lesnar would destroy Kimbo IMO. For the record I never once said otherwise. I just said that Kimbo has better standup skills

I HATE lesnar but lesnar has some raw talent and came from a good wrestling background. Kimbo came from street fighting where he made up his own rules so he had the advantage. Lesnar has fought some tough guys but kimbo has been thrown old men and cans.
