The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently inked light heavyweight Houston Alexander to a new five-fight contract extension, locking-in the services of the hard-hitting Nebraskan slugger well into 2009 if the promotion decides to keep him on the roster, according to WrestlingObserver.com.

Alexander was relatively unknown to the masses until he burst onto the scene with two destructive performances inside the Octagon, taking out top contender Keith Jardine in his debut back at UFC 71: “Liddell vs. Jackson” in May 2007 and then crumbling Alessio Sakara at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” less than four months later.

“The Nebraskan Assassin,” however, quickly returned to Earth with back-to-back losses to Thiago Silva and James Irvin. In fact, Alexander didn’t last more than four minutes combined in those two bouts.

Despite his recent struggles, Alexander remains a fan favorite and a crowd pleaser win or lose. That’s more than likely the reason the promotion made the decision to keep him around.

He will have his opportunity to get back on the winning track against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Eric Schafer at UFC Fight Night 15 in front of a hometown crowd at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha. Neb., on September 17.

Haha I hope he beats Eric at UFN 15 because it would suck to sign this 5 fight contract and then drop his 3rd straight fight. But i dont see houston losing that fight but it is mma and crazy things can happen.

The UFC likes Houston because:

1: You know he's going to stand and brawl.

2: He's good for building up real stars. Visually he's impressive, so it gives uneducated fans a favorable impression of those who beat him.

3: Despite being completely one-dimensional, he's shown some promise.

Although I thnk Houston will pull it off, it's a classic style vs style match...either way it goes, it won't leave the first round.

ive said this since thiago.

take away his last 2 fights, and hes arguably the most feared LHW out there. I really hope he gets back into the mix. Hopefully a future fight with Wandy. Would be the best 30 second fight anyone had ever seen.

Agreed on all accounts.

He brings it for every fight. That's good enough for me.

Yep. Not to mention, I met him back at 77 and he was the most humble fighter I've met to date...it's hard not to like someone like that.

I believe he will take KenFlo's spots as "The King of FIght Night." IM glad they kept him around, hes exciting to watch even if he probally has reached his peak at 37 or 38.

I heard people say "he has a good story" what is it?

Alexander is a single father raising six children.

Houston donated one of his kidneys to his oldest daughter in 2000.

I just want to see houston face rampage down the line if he can string some wins together.

Just think about that staredown and the crazy stand up brawl they would have.

He's exciting but his chin is really questionable. I like the guy. He has a real fiery attitude in the cage. The problem is he needs to be matched up with guys that aren't going to take him down.

I want to see Houston win his next fight but I don't see it happening. Houston looks terrible off his back and he's going up against a guy that has some pretty good wrestling and ju jitsu. Schafer was able to take Stephan Bonnar down so I'd imagine he should be able to take Houston down as well and finish it pretty quickly from there.

It's kind of funny that a guy who just got knocked out in record time is signing a five figt contract extension.
