The heat is on MMA ref Steve Mazzagatti (pictured w/stache) in this week leading up to UFC 87. The formerly mustacheiod Mazzagatti's competence has been called into question more than few times by media, fans and most importantly Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar spoke with ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe and basically called Mazzagatti a clown for his actions early on in the loss to Frank Mir. Lesnar grazed the back of Mir's head with just one punch. Instead of issuing a verbal warning, Mazzagatti stopped the fight with only 25 seconds elapsed and deducted a point from Lesnar.
"It's just an consistency in the reffing by that particular referee. Every fight that I ever watch him ref there's a lot of inconsistency. I'm not naming any names."

You know what?
I kind of agree with Lesnar. When I watched that live,as soon as Mazzagatti made them restart I yelled out BS.Along with about 5 other people in the room. Mir beat Lesnar, imo, fair and square, but I did think the restart was a bad call.
Lesnar looked more impressive losing than Mir did winning to me.After the fight was over, everyone on the forums was talking about Broc, despite the loss. LOL,I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I thought the restart was fair but there was no reason for the point to be taken away.

I thought i saw several blows to the back of the head. I thought both the restart and point deduction were good under the circumstances. It was happening so fast....the ref had to do something before there was damage done due to an illegal blow that could impact the outcome of the fight....I could be wrong though. i'll watch again.

Should have been a stopped, formal warning. Not a point taken away. However, I can't say that would've changed the outcome of the fight.

The stoppage was fine. Lesnar was swinging like a backyard brawler in there. No technique, just punch after punch raining down in an out of control fashion going for the quick knockout. Mazzagatti had to step in because 1) It looked like several landed on the back of the head, and 2) because Lesnar was showing no signs of picking or aiming his shots accurately. Instead he was like a baboon trying to open a coconut. The point deduction was unnecessary, but the stoppage and the restart were perfectly warranted.
This doesn't sound very professional of Brock to me.

i didn't think any of his shots landed clean to the back of the head, it shouldn't have been stopped or restarted, and you could make a case that the fight would have been over if the restart didn't happen.

this has been argued to hell already. the general consensus was that he did in fact hit him in the back of the head and several times. they were unintentional but most definitely to the back of the head. i disagree with the point deduction but the stoppage was just imo.

i thought the fight was being callled when he stopped it. i dont agree at all with the point deduction and really dont agree with the restart. i do agree with lesanr stating the consistency of things. earlier that nite there was a fight where a guy got warned like 5-6 times for back of the head shots and NEVER was restarted nor point deduction. there will be more fights where refs come in question and i agree that should be brought up. people always blame bad judging and disrespect a fighter for a bad performance but to say the ref screwed up and thats wrong?
anyone who dont agree with atleast part of what lesnar said watch rumble johnsons last loss and think a little bit more about it.
cheers to a GREAT night of fights tomorrow

When St. Pierre hits Hughes to the back of the head repeatedly, he just gets warned over and over again.
When Brock does it once, the fight gets restarted and a point gets taken away.
It looks to me like Mazagatti doesn't like Brock Lesnar.. maybe because of all the hype and he thinks he should stick to WWE? Who knows, but there was defenitely something personal in there.
