After months of openly considering the move, Zuffa LLC is now committed to folding some of the WEC's heavier weight classes into the UFC, and UFC President Dana White today said the process is already underway.

White confirmed the partial WEC-UFC merger while a guest on today's edition of TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

"We're working on that now," White said of the merger.

Ever since Zuffa LLC (the UFC's parent company) purchased the organization in December 2006, White has maintained that the WEC would be run as a separate entity -- not a feeder system for the UFC -- with a focus on the sport's lighter weight classes.

Although some fighters -- including current WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner, former UFC title-holder Jens Pulver and featherweight prospect Leonard Garcia -- went from the UFC to the WEC, they weren't necessarily demotions. In fact, Pulver and Garcia made the moves so they could fight at 145 pounds (a weight class not offered in the UFC), and Varner joined the WEC with the promise of a title shot.

However, the organization has struggled to stock its middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, and rather than pull talent from the UFC, White said the WEC's 205-pound and 185-pound divisions will be folded into the UFC.

"The answer is yes, and we're working on that right now," White said.

i think this is a good move. the wec's lhw and mw division are not deep at all. it will be nice to see the few guys that make it from the wec compete in the ufc. most of the fighters will be dropped (hopefully doug marshall, i can't stand him).

that's not going to happen. filho and silva are good friends and they said they would never fight each other. regardless, i don't think that filho should be next in line if he beats sonnen anyways. that would probably have to go to okami. it would be nice one day though to see filho/silva.

MW, LW, and HW might be "folded"

and I dont see any of the champs staying in Top 5 contention. The only 3 fighters I can see making it in the UFC are

Shields, Faber, Torres, and 2 of them cant be in the UFC because of there weight classes.

Shields would get mauled by GSP tho.

Jake Shields fights for EliteXC. Did you mean Condit? GSP would beat Shields and Condit anyway.

And the WEC doesn't have a HW class, just LHW. And they are keeping their lightweight class as well.

This is for the best. WEC can now expand its roster with lower weight classes and bring up lower caliber fighters as it mow can merge some potential (pretty much Paul Fihlo) into the UFC. They should have Fihlo Silva soon just to say they are merging the titles. I dont think Fihlo has a chance but it would make money/

I just don't understand why a guy who is 5'8" at 185lbs (regardless of how talented) would want to jump into the UFC's LHW Division!!?? C'mon can you really see Paulo winning much against guys such as Lidell, Shogun, Wandy, Irvin even....the reach advantage is going to be ridiculous!!! I think if anything Paulo would consider dropping to WW.

I really don't understand Filho in that hes packed WAY too much muscle onto his frame, and care barely make MW now. Moving to LHW would be a mistake because he already has trouble with the reach of most MW fighters. He should really allow himself to return to a decent muscle tone and take it to WW, or fight as MW and actually have a gas tank.
