After her dominating win over Shayna Baszler at last weekend's "EliteXC: Unfinished Business" event, Cristiane Cyborg (5-0) was mentioned as a possible Oct. 4 opponent for EliteXC poster girl Gina Carano (6-0).

Instead, the undefeated Carano is expected to face Kelly Kobold-Gavin (16-2-1), according to Mike Chiappetta of NBCSports.com, citing a source close to one of the fighters.

The bout is expected to be announced soon, according to the report.

The Carano vs. Kobold-Gavin fight will be one of the main draws for the October CBS-broadcast event, which takes place at the 22,000-seat BankAtlantic Center near Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Heavyweight Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson is slated to headline the event.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported last weekend that Carano, a gladiator on NBC's "American Gladiators," had been announced as an Oct. 4 competitor. However, an opponent wasn't immediately revealed.

Kobold-Gavin, a six-year MMA veteran, hasn't competed since August 2006, when she suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Julie Kedzie at a BodogFIGHT event. It was her second consecutive loss after strarting her career with a near-spotless 16-0-1 record.

good marketing strategy on the part of elitexc though, why give us the match right away, give them each another fight to build up a bigger fanbase and hopefully neither of them lose before they meet

Lol why would they want them to meet after a few fights? Build them both up so theres a huge demand for it and then you make money. Would Fedor vs Cro Cop have been as big if they met that early in their careers? It's so much better to build them both up so they both have big followings.

So much for the plans for the Women's Championship match. I was hoping it would be on the next show.

jjfreak, come on man its womens MMA on Elite XC.. no one really cares about a woman missing weight... because no one likes anyone but carano because shes insanely hot.

yes, and that is the problem. no one should get preferential treatment, let alone preferential treatment because of looks instead of talent. it is sickening to me how people let her get away with this. if people want Woman's MMA to be taken seriously, then that type of logic must be stopped.

I'm with JJF on this not making weight is just disrespectful to the idea of woman's MMA. If you cant make the weight then you shouldnt be fighting. Woman's MMA deserves just as much respect as man's MMA. It's not about what gender is fighting but the fact that they are fighting. I think its a shame that women only have 3 min rounds and not 5 mins. Its almost saying we don't think you can cut it and when Gina doesn't make weight it just makes people think they cant cut it in real MMA.
