I have already posted in the newbie forum and was directed to this section for some added advice. As I said in the other forum I am quite small, 5'4 and only about 120 pounds. I have recently gotten into weight training and have packed on about 20 pounds in the past few months. I am also in great physical condition because I am in the Air Force. Even though I have gained a lot of weight lately I haven't gotten any slower on my run times. All of the weight that I have been gaining is 95% muscle and the rest is water weight with a small bit of fat I'm sure. My target weight is to be around 150-155. I feel that I can reach this goal by next spring if I stay commited to my diet and workout. I am still fairly new to all of the weight training so any advice for that would be appriciated as well. My real question is about starting MMA training. I'm wondering if I should begin martial arts/MMA training now or if I should wait until I reach my target weight? What would be the benifits/ problems with doing it either way. I have no experience with any martial arts so I would be a total beginer at all MMA type training. Also I think it might be helpful if I say a bit more about me right now. I'm almost 21 years old and my current weight lifting stack is Animal Pak, Animal Pump and a mixture of whey, soy, and cassien protiens amounting to aproximately 160g of supplemented protein per day. I also eat as healthy as I can while living on an Air Force base which is where I will be stuck until the middle of October, after which I will be returning home and will be able to have more control over my diet and my time I spend training.
I hope that I have given enough information and if there is anything that I'm missing let me know and I will try to fill you in. Also sorry for such a long post I just don't want to forget anything. Thanks

On your question about if you should start MMA training now.
My anwser is yes, yes because it doesnt matter what size you are. Also you say your in great physical shape, thats a ++ right there to start.
Reasons why you should start now. (Pros)
: Every little bit of experience you can get will help
: By doing MMA you will reach your goal much quicker by starting to train in MMA
: Will keep you busy and more active

There is no Cons to tell you the truth..

IMO, start as soon as you can, its fun, and its a great thing to learn.

Depending on what you ma you start out training you are probably going to lose weight at first. Make sure you get ur calories post and pre workout, drink a lot of water.

Like said before any martial art you do is good. Experience is key, but just getting started is the hardest part. Be committed and listen to anyone. The best thing about mma is that everyone helps each other out.

wow thanks for all of the replies already. I have luckily found a place that is close to my apartment that offers muay-thai kickboxing, BJJ, and have a trainer who does greko roman wrestling sessions. The price seems right, but they don't seem to be a MMA specific place. Now all I have to do is wait until I get to go home from my tech training. Is there a specific style of martial arts that I should start out with as a base or is it more of a preference thing? I also have a large amount of space back at my parents house that I could use to set up a little training area what would you guys recommend to help me get started? I already have a heavy bag, was thinking about a speed bag and also maybe throwing together a cage to mess around in w/ some of my friends. Any suggestions would be great. thanks

check out the thread "Challenge" by Don. There is a lot of training information for MMA.

See Mixed Martial Arts training does involve a lot of strength training in it already and cardio. So you should do it while gaining weight. There is no downfalls to doing both at the same time, but the set back is that if you wait you will lose the time you could have been obviously training.

As far as diet I cant help there, I know nothing about it. Good luck.
