if you can't find anything local, grab some friends and roll. alot of these mma gyms have started from nothing but some guys wanting to roll. rolling is 1 thing getting good instruction is another. find someplace you could travel to on weekend and get run over. take techinque home and teach partners. But striking i would find a gym, learn from a pro good habit, good tech.

Anyone looking in the midwest need look no further than Iowa. There are at least 10 different MMA training acadamies. I will try to get info on them all and post.
One that I know of if you are really serious is MFS. I know a couple people that have trained with Militich and if you want it bad enough it can happen.

Im a little distance from you guys (Emporia Kansas), but I have encountered the same problem. So I am currently in the process of trying to open a facility here...Granted it isnt going to be HUGE (at least early on ) but we are going to host fights and stuff. PM me if you are interested in me keeping you posted. It would be awesome to draw fighters from your area! Also, if anyone knows any trainers in specific disciplines that are looking to teach classes, give me a pm!

A bit far from the area you are describing, perhaps, but MMA gyms are thriving in Ohio. There are quite a few in Columbus alone. We also have several events per year, both amateur and pro. I just participated in my first Octagon fight on 1/27 in Columbus and it was a blast.
What promotion did you fight for??
Bo Kimly's?? Hammerhouse?? NAAFS??

I lived in Columbus for about 9 years. A couple of friends of mine used to fight in Bo Kimly's events at Promo West Pavilion (called something else now) back in like 2002 and 2003. It was great time watching those guys fight. I can definitely attest that MMA is HUGE in Ohio and has been for a while.
I live in NC now and the state recently passed a law and started allowing MMA events. I went to Ruckus in the Cage in Charlotte a couple weeks ago. It was a very good ametuer event and the skill level was higher than I thought it would be. Looking forward to many more shows in NC.
I know nothing about Kansas though.

i'm not reading any other post.. MMA in the midwest? should be really easy to find. i mean. a lot of big names are from the midwest and damn.. everyone wrestles.. and then gets into mma after college or high school. your problem will be finding the school for you, not just finding a school

Well in my defense, as starter of this thread, i made this thread 3 years ago and mma was not as popular then. Anytime i would ask about MMA people would give me a blank stare and say "you mean ultimate fighting?" Since i started this thread a bjj black belt has opened a gym 10 min from my house, a branch of team nogueria established one in a town an hour away, a muay thai/boxing gym expanded their place and set up a new one 5 min from my house, and several wannabe mma classes are being offered in gyms all across town. this thread has served its original purpose for me and hopefully new comers as well, even though im sure nobody will have trouble finding a place to train anywhere in the midwest nowadays.

As others have said there are good places to train in Wichita now. I train at LaselvaMMA and I am very happy with the gym. BJJ is taught by Marcio Laselva who is a black belt under Roberto Tozi. There are a number of high level belts that train at LaselvaMMA and there is close to 100 guys in BJJ alone.
Kickboxing is taught by Marcio Navarro is who a black belt with training in traditional kickboxing and MT kickboxing. Marcio is an MMA fighter and is an undefeated kickboxing champion.
The boxing team at LaselvaMMA is taught by Coach Pappin. Coach has over 30 years of coaching experience and routinely has golden gloves champions training with him.
There are also a fitness class and kid’s bjj, kickboxing, and wrestling offered. Classes are held in the morning and the evening.
MMA is another option in the gym with Eric Payne, Marcio Navarro, and Marshall Manning being the main guys representing the gym but there are a number of guys gearing up to fight.
In June, LaselvaMMA will be moving to a new 20,000 sq foot gym. I highly recommend that everyone check at all options in town before picking your MMA gym, but it is hard to beat what they offer at LaselvaMMA.
More info at LaselvaMMA
