The pay-per-view numbers for Affliction: Banned will be among some of the most anticipated and watched of the year. A strong number will be evidence that there is a market for MMA outside of the UFC. A weak number will provide support to the notion that there is no market for MMA, only for the UFC. The obvious question then is: what constitutes a good or a bad number?

Last week, Affliction Entertainment COO Michael Cohen told MMAPayout.com that he guaranteed the event would do above 50,000 buys, while Affliction VP Tom Atencio has publicly stated that it would take 250,000 buys for the show to break even. Based on the fact that no MMA event outside of the UFC has broken 100,000 buys, conventional wisdom around the industry is that anything above that mark would be a success.

MMAPayout.com has learned that bar sales for Banned are believed to have been around 700. For comparison, it is believed that the UFC typically has between 750-1,000 in bar sales. However, it should be noted that it isn’t clear whether or not the Affliction event was offered at a discount to the UFC’s events.

That number may give credence to what appeared to be a growing sense of optimism concerning the event’s chances on pay-per-view within the industry over the last week. Officials at InDemand were also reportedly excited about the events prospects.

Are you shitting me........only 100K buys? I thought MMA had blown up and was "the fastest growing sport" and all that?? I thought there would be like 500k buys in the US alone.

Yeah it's not really mma, just UFC. Dissapointing since there are so many great fighters that no one knows about.

It doesn't seem like a lot, but think of it this way. How many of you guys watch PPVs by yourself? I'm always watching with at least two more people, if not seven or eight. For those 100K buys, theres probably 500k people watching, which is pretty damn good for a fledgling promotion and fledgling sport.

I probably watch 9 out of every 10 PPV's alone. Mainly because all my friends like to party/drink and I end up having to try to watch over the noise they create. I have plenty of friends who like to watch MMA (or maybe just UFC), but I dont have any friends who are 'hardcore' fans.

Hopefully Affliction breaks 100,000 buys and they continue with events as planned. Saturdays card was great.

Just curious: I wonder what the comparison of Affliction's 1st PPV and UFC's 1st PPV is like?

UFC current PPV's cost just over $1000 to buy for a licenced bar. (including the taxes and applicable fees.)

The Affliction card was available for public broadcast for $350.00 through COMM.

With the entire undercard available for free on TFN.

So a 700 buy rate against the UFC 750-1000 isn't great but it was up against a free event which the UFC never has to worry about....

Hopefully Strikeforce and Affliction can together put on a free NBC card during a UFC PPV and we can see how affective it really is!

Well I will say I don't think their PPV sales will be that great at all. I ahve a buddy that works at large cable company and he is saying they didnt get many calls at all for affliction and they didn't over staff for the event like they do for most big PPV events. So I don't see there PPV sales being much at all and not even close to the avg UFC ppv. The problem is all these start ups are banking on this MMA explosion but the truth is there isn't really a MMA explosion its a UFC explosion. Now don't get me wrong MMA is growing but not near at the rate the UFC has. Thats one reason why I think Affliction is going about this all wrong. The UFC was operating at a huge loss for years and paying their fighter a hell of a lot less than what Affliction paying their fighters. The only thing that made the UFC make a huge turn around was TUF. I don't see that happening for Affliction.

Yeah I'm one of the few that watch PPV by myself. I'm not a big party person like most of my friends are. So I don't care for the drinking and partying going on while I'm trying to watch the event. I have a room just for watching TV. Its got a surround sound system and a 60inch LCD. My wife and I are big on Movies and sports and don't like to go to the theater so we made our own.
