A tournament is coming up for submission grappling where I live and I had a few questions.
1. With three months training, should I do it? 2. What is the point system for the tournaments, do you go til someone is submitted or have a time limit and can have it go to judges? 3. Do they go by age and/or weight classes?
I know without knowing the tournament name, answers will prob be limited but any info would be nice.
Thanks

I don't have any advice, except if I were you I would first look up the number and find out from them what the rules are and what experience level is recommended and the assigned weight classes.

Honestly if you had a tournament name or any info i could help you dearly. I compete and competed in many grappling tournaments. Stuff like NAGA, and Grapplers Quest, sorta have the same scoring system. Stuff like Pan Ams,Endgame Submissions Grappling tournys, etc have diffrent systems. Like i said just get a name and i could help you. But i would enter any tournament you can. Get the experience. Trust me if you plan to compete (MMA,Grappling, whatever) in the future, you will need the experience. Also, whats there to loose, the worst that could happen is a loss. You loose, you go home and capitalize off it. Learn from your mistakes.

Some good advice there.. obviously you'll be in thier beginers group if they have one... so most of the people should have roughly the same level of experience as you do.. if they do not have a beginers group still go but watch.. or compete... but just remember your there to learn.. and get experience.. if you are out classed.. big deal... just walk away having learned something...

Most tournaments have divisions by weight, experience level and age. Points systems and time periods will vary. I competed in my first tournament after 4 months training and was completely fine. Just like any other time...if you get caught...just tap. The experience of competing is extremely valuable for your training. Controlling your adreneline and your breathing...the unfamiliarity with your opponents....the spectators.....learning to drown out every voice but your coach or instructor during matches. All of these things you won't experience in the gym or dojo. I say compete as much as you can as soon as you can.

I agreee with the advice you're getting on your first point.
For point #2 any tournament that isn't held in somebody's basement will have time limits and judges. It would be impossible to run a tournament without those constraints.
For point #3 any tournament will have weight classes. Typically there will be 2-3 age classes (over 35 or 40, under 16 or 18 and then everybody else) and a few skill levels (maybe advanced, intermediate and beginner for no-gi and belt colors for gi). The number of divisions usually depends on the tournament and they may discard some of the classes if there are not enough people signing up. There is often an "absolute" class for any age/weight/skill to enter, but I'd avoid that one at your level of experience.
If anyone can find a tournament that proves me wrong as far as having no time limits or weight classes please provide a link....but I don't think you'll find any reputable ones.

Nope. I'd say that's dead on !! The tournament that I compete in mostly has a three min. 1st round all submissions....a two minute 2nd round with points and submission. If there is no winner after 2 rounds the 3rd is sudden death with the first take down being the winner. The times and point system will vary tournament to tournament, but they definitely all have them to my knowledge.
Pitbul09 could probably find the tournament's website and find all of this information posted....or get info sent to him from the organizers/promoters of the tournament.

tournaments are fun, its not about winning or losing... its rather about seeing what others do and comparing yourself. and of course ultimately meeting friends and learning together.
point system in gracie JJ is based on submissions and positions. Full mount gets you 4 points i think. Its usually explained in beginning of the tournament. If you can keep someone in the guard for 2 minutes you get some # of points too i believe.
with 3 month you wont be going against black belts, should be fun bud.
(do try to avoid crazy looking guys who take it way too seriously, this isnt an mma match) - tap early, tap often.
hope this helps friend.
Don - I wish I could be more of assistance there. I only setup karate tournaments which is similar. You usually have to find a place that would agree to host it. Have lots of wavers signed by every competitor, lots of planning around time and place and availability. Depending on state you may have to check with city council if its legal or if any fees must be paid. (Usually its a no problem)
