I am watching UFC 9, and this is the first of the early UFC's where I heard the therm mixed martial arts. Does anyone have any clue when this was first used officially?

you mean the term mma? prolly around ufc 5-10, but if you mean fighting with many different fighting styles or martial arts, then its hundreds of years....
i think mma is an american based term much involved with early UFC
